"Brrrrrrr! "

It's cold!
From Monday morning to Tuesday morning the temperature dropped 60 degrees at our home.  The ground is hard. The puddles are frozen solid. Ponds and lakes have ever-increasing ice hardening the surface.

When the wind blew over the recycling, I dashed outside for an unplanned 3 minutes in a t-shirt picking up cardboard and plastic bottles blowing down the street.  It was great to get back indoors!  The GCCN church building has frozen water pipes.  The label-loving media call this "polar vortex."  We just call it cold!

But as I look out the window I see a beautiful bright Cardinal hopping and flying around just like it is a normal day.  We're told that our exposed skin can begin to freeze in five minutes at these temperatures. How can this bird be out there for 24 hours a day with no additional winter clothing and not be transformed into a solid and frozen specimen?

Once again I am reminded of the "wonderfully and fearfully made" aspects of creation.
God has designed and made the animals and birds to be so adaptable--even under very harsh conditions.

Jesus said, "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
--Matthew 6:26

Celebrate in your life today that you have a Heavenly Father that knows your circumstances and has provided a way, an answer and a remedy!

Chaplain Tom Beard this Sunday

Chaplain Tom will be ministering the Word this Sunday.  Pastor Wes and Pastor Matt will both be at the Ministry Assessment Center weekend at the Roxbury Holiness Camp in Orrstown, Pennsylvania.  You will be blessed by the Chaplain's ministry!

The Ministry Assessment Center weekend is a first-step for those who are called into ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. It is a chance to better understand God's call to ministry, the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit and to be directed and affirmed along the path.  Pastor Wes attends each year as a staff member and Pastor Matt will be going this year as a ministerial candidate. There will be about 60 people in attendance at this conference.

Mission 2014 Offering

The Mission 2014 Offering is what enable us to have a Pastor for Children and Youth Ministries. This past year there was a very good response and this Offering raised over $10,000!  We have set a lofty but achievable goal of $18,000 for 2014

We could reach that goal if there are 25 people willing to give $2.00 per day for 2014 in addition to tithes.  That would mean $60 per month and $730 per year.  Eighty percent of those funds go directly to support our Youth Pastor.  The remaining 20% goes to support mission work around the world.

Please consider what you could do this year and drop your pledge form into the offering plate when you are able to.  Please also always mark your offering for this ministry "Mission 2014 Offering."

Bible Memorization Goal: "Sermon on the Mount"

When Jesus taught, thousands would come to listen.  Even in our day, people who don't care much for "organized religion" still are attracted to the wisdom and teaching of Jesus and through His teaching many come to know Jesus as Savior.

Pastor Wes is giving a challenge to whole GCCN community this year--to memorize the "Sermon on the Mount."  It is found in Matthew, chapters 5-7.  There are 111 verses, so over the course of the year, that would mean memorizing just one verse every 3 days.  A lot of those verses are short.  Some of those verses you already know, such as the "Lord's Prayer."

The real challenge is not memorizing, but sticking with it throughout the whole year.  From children to seniors, this would be a great thing to do!  If you stick with this, when you come to the end of 2014 you will see that this was one of the very best things you did during the year!  Let's encourage one another!

Additional Office Assistance Needed
We are so delighted that Athene Kan is assisting in the Church Office each week--thank you!  We will be needing some additional assistance in the near future in relation to bulletin preparation and data entry.  If you are able to devote an hour or two in assisting with vital needs, that would be appreciated.  Please let Pastor Wes know if you are interested.  There may be a small remuneration if that would be helpful. .

Good News From God's Word:
"God makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the air nest by the waters; they sing among the branches....The trees of the LORD are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. There the birds make their nests; the stork has its home in the pine trees....How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all..."   From Psalm 104
