Greetings!

With February being a shorter month I've deliberately kept the newsletter shorter too!
If you read nothing else from this month's series of articles, I would encourage you all to read the 'Go grab a coffee' section. Truly inspirational...
As you can see we don't have a featured charity for this month, so please don't forget to nominate a charity for a feature article or maybe there is an event coming up which could do with a bit of free PR. If so please email me and I'll do my best...

SMP announced as finalist in prestigious awards  ...

STOP PRESS! - I am delighted to announce that I have been shortlisted as a finalist in the Corporate Social Responsibility category of the inaugural Guardian Water Treatment Constructive Carer's Awards.

More details in next month's issue... but win or lose I am delighted to have been shortlisted. I will let you know how I get on...

Disabled people to get business start up support ...

Disabled people looking to start a business will be able to apply for grants to cover the costs of specialist equipment, travel and support workers, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced.

The Access to Work grants are available to people with a disability or health condition that affects their ability to work or leads to work-related costs, and who are already enrolled on the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) scheme. Minister for disabled people Esther McVey explained: "We've opened up our flagship programme so that disabled people have the same choice to start up their own business as everyone else."

Unfair dismissal compensation limits increase ...

The maximum amount of compensation that can be awarded in cases of unfair dismissal has increased from £72,300 to £74,200, under the Employment Rights (Increase of Limits) Order 2012.

In addition, the maximum "week's pay", used to calculate compensation awards for unfair dismissal, has increased from £430 to £450, and the maximum amount of a guarantee payment payable to an employee for any workless day has risen from £23.50 to £24.20.

The new limits apply to tribunals for unfair dismissals that occurred on or after 1 February 2013.

Employment Law consultations published ...

A raft of consultation documents relating to employment law proposals have been published by the Government. Several consultations have been opened, including plans for an 'early conciliation', whereby employment tribunal claimants would have to send details of their claim to ACAS before lodging it with the court, and proposals to remove service provision charges from the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006 (TUPE).

Other documents include the Government's response to earlier consultations on measures to encourage the use of settlement agreements and introducing a cap on unfair dismissal compensation.

Go grab a coffee...

I'm sure most of you will have heard of, or maybe regularly access, the TED videos. If you're looking for a bit of inspiration, click here to have a look at this video of a disabled wheelchair user.

I won't say what it's about, just go and have a look and I bet you say 'WOW' out loud!
