Veteran's Day Celebration
On Wednesday, November 7, the fourth and fifth graders honored our Topsfield veterans. The students learned a number of songs and poems that highlighted the contribution and sacrifice of our service men and women. We met a number of veterans on the green to honor and celebrate their service to our country. The veterans shared their experiences with us allowing us to deepen our understanding of their service to our country. Upon return to Proctor, the students created cards of thanks that we will send to the men and women currently in the military.

From The Health Office |
Simple Steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones from Flu
From the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
· Wash hands with soap and warm water or use an alcohol based hand rub or gel frequently, especially after visiting public places or being in contact with anyone with a cold or the flu. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
· Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Turn your head (never cough in the direction of someone else) and cough or sneeze into a tissue. If tissues are not available, cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow.
· Do not take young children, those with immune system problems or the chronically ill into large crowds unnecessarily when flu is in your community.
· Avoid close contact (holding, hugging, and kissing) with anyone who has a cold or the flu. Be very careful with children, as they are most likely to become sick with the flu.
· Stay home from work or school and avoid public activities for 24 hours after fever has returned to normal without fever reducing medicationsuch as Tylenol or motrin.
· Do not share items that can spread germs and viruses, like drinking cups, straws or other items that you put in your mouth.
· Clean things that are touched often in the household, classroom and child care settings: door or refrigerator handles, phones, water faucets, light switches etc. |
Fifth Grade News
|
Fifth graders have been working hard to perfect their poetic voice with distinguished poet, Judith Steinberg. Using figurative language and imagery techniques our students have written beautiful works of art. Look for their finished work soon as we complete our poems.
The fifth grade class is grateful for the DASH volunteers who helped us understand how individuals with physical limitations are impacted in our world. We learned the importance of empathy and look forward to demonstrating compassion to others who have been impacted by physical limitations.

FROZEN FRUIT SMOOTHIES:
Sometimes fruit smoothies have a breakfast connotation, when really they are great for lunch too. Simply make the smoothie in the evening and freeze it overnight. In the morning, put it in your child's lunchbox and by the time it's lunch, it will be the perfect temperature and consistency. Furthermore, the frozen smoothie will not only be a part of a healthful lunch, it will also keep the other perishables in your child's lunch cold...it's a win win situation! Add some veggies and dip or perhaps some cubes of cheese and whole grain crackers, and lunch is done! Here's the recipe for my wild berry fruit smoothies:
Wild Berry Fruit Smoothies: Ingredients: 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt 1/4 cup of milk 1/2 cup of frozen wild berries 2 tablespoons of ground flax seed (optional) Method: 1. Pour all ingredients into the blender. 2. Blend until smooth and put into the freezer overnight. Enjoy at lunch the next day! Note: Any fruit combinations can be used when making these smoothies...another one of my favorites is a Totally Tropical Smoothie with frozen bananas, mango, and strawberries. Until Next Week...Plan Well, Pack Well, Live Well, :) Katie
P.S. Don't forget to sign up for the YOGURT nutrition/cooking education class on November 26, 2012!
