It is the season for graduations. I went to one last Friday. If you can get past the scorching heat, the sun turning bleachers into solar weapons (I think I am missing a layer of skin), the mother/daughter team behind you arguing louder than the valedictorian is speaking and the woman who refuses to put down her umbrella so people behind her can see, there is the joy in watching someone you love move onto a new era in their life. Their happiness is real. It is an exciting time...remember? Time and reality has the tendency to jade us a bit and we may snicker at the words of an unhampered optimistic speech, but hold on. There is gold in them there words! There are gifts for grown folks at the graduation.

Social+Emotional Intelligence (S+EI)Coaching and Workshop Programs

Social and emotional intelligence is the ability to be aware of our own emotions and those of others, in the moment, and to use that information to manage ourselves and manage our relationships. S+EI is about developing personal power, that inner knowing that we can handle what life is throwing at us. It's about integrity - knowing - and choosing - what's right. It's about building trust AND building bonds. It is about being more effective in our personal and professional relationships. It is about making a difference.

Additional Information

Graduations are designed to pay tribute to hard work and inspire folks to create an amazing life. The interesting thing is that events like it are few and far between from that point forward. But think of how you feel when you hear a nugget from a graduation speech that hits home and is relevant to you today. Words of inspiration are for every one of all ages and we can all glean life lessons at any point in our lives.

So, we are going to a 'grown folk's' graduation right now. What is different is that you are sitting at a lovely table in an air-conditioned room, your seat has a cushion and you have your favorite cocktail in your left hand. Something's are just simply better at a 'grown folk's' graduation. Settle into your chair and prepare for some good advice. In my opinion, here is some of the best graduation nuggets:

  • We have forgotten how to value things without a price tag. Hence, when we get to our most abundant gifts -- like attention, insight, compassion -- we confuse their worth because they're, well, priceless. ~Nipun Mehta
  • ... graduates make sure you can write this sentence: 'I am who I always wanted to be.' ~Sanjay Gupta
  • I cannot stress enough that the answer to a lot of your life's questions is often in someone else's face. Try putting your iPhones down every once in a while and look at people's faces. ~Ira Glass
  • "Don't work for fools. It's not worth it. Getting paid less to work for people you like and believe in is much better for you (and your career) in the long run." ~Adam Savage
  • Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. - Steve Jobs
  • You know that uncertainty you feel today? It never goes away. The question is, do you know how to make uncertainty your friend? - Brooks

Okay grown folks, your favorite song is playing, move your tassel to the other side of your cap and stride down the aisle. It is never too late to learn, change, move on or be inspired. Your whole life is in front of you.   Where are you going to go and what are you going to do with your one wonderful life?
