Aluminum vs. Steel Starrco Co. manufactures our pre-fabricated interior wall systems using structural aluminum framework. We prefer the aluminum framing to our competitors steel framing for several reasons: Structural Integrity: Not all aluminum is created equal. Starrco uses only aluminum with a T6 structural temper for maximum strength. Our aluminum components have been reviewed and the loading capacities checked by three different design engineering companies. In addition, we have taken the extra step of having our framing structurally tested by a nationally recognized independent testing laboratory. The tests were supervised by a structural engineer and confirmed the design calculations of our framing systems. Sustainability: Aluminum is 100% recyclable with no loss of quality or physical characteristics. It is significantly more resistant to deformation or loss of structural integrity over time vs steel. This means a much longer service life with less maintenance than steel framed systems.
Structural Design: The main framing component for our wall systems is the two piece wiring stud. The design of our wiring studs allows the two pieces to "seat" together forming a solid structural connection. The design will comply with the IBC Building Code requirement that wall resist a 5 lb per square foot lateral load (IBC section 1607.13). Beware of systems in which the stud halves do not seat or touch. The studs can be easily twisted or deformed if stress is placed on the wall. Corrosion Resistance: The 6063 aluminum alloy Starrco uses for our framing is highly corrosion resistant. Even if the painted finish is scratched, the aluminum will resist corrosion and rust. Steel systems need to be checked carefully. Even a small scratch can allow for rust to attack their systems. Some companies use unpainted steel floor track and cover it with a vinyl base. If water gets to the track, it will start rusting immediately. Fit & Finish: Our extruded aluminum framing has tighter tolerances than roll formed steel. This creates a consistently tighter fit for all the components. In addition, the edges of the aluminum are rounded creating a smoother look with no raw exposed metal.
