Nothing Says Sumer Like

Vacation Bible School

Summer is here and that means lots of things going on - school/college break, family vacations, youth camp, music camp, mission trips, and the list seems to be endless for how much we try to pack into our summer.  But for many churches, nothing says summer like Vacation Bible School (VBS).  There is a lot of work that goes into a successful VBS; curriculum selection, volunteer recruitment, calendar selection, training, rehearsal, learning songs and hand motions and the favorite - room decoration!

Is it worth all the effort?  Does VBS still work?  Is VBS still relevant today?

The answer to all these questions is a resounding YES!

Did you know:

  • VBS as we know it today was started in the late 1800s - in a saloon
  • The early VBS events would run for multiple weeks
  • The early 1900s saw the introduction of standardized curriculum
  • By the late 1900s over 5 million children yearly were attending VBS
  • Today, around 25% of annual baptisms in Baptist churches can be traced to decisions made in VBS

Many churches in the JBA network will conduct a VBS at some point during the summer months.  In fact, 9 out of 10 Southern Baptist Convention churches do host a VBS each year.  There IS a lot work put into running a VBS but the numbers - volunteers, attendance, non-church goers who participate, decisions for Christ - all prove that VBS is worth the effort, it still works and it's still relevant.

For many churches, their annual VBS is their largest outreach/evangelistic effort and is also their most successful.  Hey, take a moment to ask your Pastor and others in your church about their VBS experience - many will tell you of a time at a VBS when they made their personal decision to become a Christ follower.

I would love to hear your VBS stories - drop me a line at with funny stories, stories of decisions, how your church does VBS (daytime, evening, number of days), or anything else you would like to share - I love stories!
