Stronger Together

Hello Friends of the EngageJax Network,

The Lord is doing many wonderful things here in Jacksonville. My only regret upon experiencing His work among us is that too often not enough people have the chance to celebrate it. Recently, I had to opportunity to join Jacksonville Emmanuel Baptist Church for worship on a Sunday afternoon. This congregation is a Burmese group planted by Pastor Daniel Thang and others who have a passion to reach the lost in Jax. They recently entered our Watchcare status and look forward to serving with our network of churches in the future.

The Sunday that I preached to them was a particularly hot day, but that did not discourage the group of forty-plus folks from gathering in an upper room on the campus of the First Korean Baptist Church of Jax. I did not understand the Burmese language they used to worship God, but their devotion to the Lord Jesus was evident as they sang, recited Scripture from memory, prayed, and shared personal testimonies about what Jesus did in their lives.

After the worship service, the church hosted a luncheon for us and we met many of the people. Pastor Thang expressed his thankfulness for our network of churches and asked that we remember them as they continue to expand the Kingdom. I am humbled by their faithfulness.

My time with the Jax Emmanuel folks reminded me of the role you asked me to fulfill as a missionary strategist for our network of churches. I believe Exodus 17 clearly illustrates my role. In Exodus 17, the Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim. Moses sent Joshua out to lead a group of men to fight and ultimately defeat their enemy. We learn, however, that God worked through Moses to bring victory to the Israelites. Whenever Moses held the staff of God up, the Israelites prevailed and whenever Moses lowered the staff of God, Amalek prevailed (:11). As the battle continued, Moses could no longer hold the staff of God up on his own so Aaron and Hur came alongside him and supported his hands so that they remained steady until the battle was won (:12).

The Lord called me here to serve alongside our churches and especially alongside our church planters. He strategically places me next to them, like Aaron and Hur served Moses, so that they can complete their mission and expand the Kingdom. Israel won the battle at Rephidim by the grace and through the power of God and God chose to use a network of people to achieve His purpose. Likewise, God uses a network of people to achieve His purpose and expand His Kingdom here in Jax. I consider it a tremendous blessing to "hold up the arms" of our pastors as they serve this city.

May God receive the glory and may we all remain faithful to our roles in this great victory!
