What Will I Do to Help

the Blind See?

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of preaching at Holiday Hill Baptist Church during their Mission Fair weekend. Dr. Byrd and his team were very gracious to me and my family. We had a great time learning about the mission work the church engages in and heard the Holiday Hill story. They are a living example of God's grace and mercy. I believe the Lord will do great things through their ministry in Jax.

I had several weeks to prepare my message for the event. It didn't take long, however, for the Lord to help me settle on a passage of Scripture from which to preach. I preached from Luke 4:16-21. In this passage, Jesus proclaims his  identity as the long-awaited Messiah. He also clearly declares His purpose for coming. I am sure you do not want to read my entire sermon here, but let me tell you about one of Jesus' purposes for coming. In verse 18, Jesus says, "He sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind." While Jesus miraculously restores physical sight to some blind people, on a much larger scale He gives spiritual sight to those who are spiritually blind and separated from God because of sin. I concluded that it was our mission as followers of Jesus to tell people about Him, to invite them to receive Him as Lord, and to receive sight.

As I concluded my sermon, I asked the congregation who would stand and declare his or her intention to bring sight to the blind by telling others about Jesus. Many said "amen" and one little girl waved her hand. She thrust her little hand as high as she could in the air so I would see it. I saw it and said, "We will do it together." I closed the sermon with prayer and we finished the worship service with a time of invitation. Dr. Byrd invited anyone who desired prayer or to make known a decision to the congregation to come forward.

That little girl, who waved her hand in the air, came forward. Her father introduced her to me (she will remain anonymous). She is blind and attends the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. She feels burdened for her classmates who are spiritually blind. She said to me, "They don't know Jesus. They haven't received their sight from Him. I want to tell them about Jesus so they can receive sight like me."

My eyes welled up with tears and I tried with difficulty to swallow the lump in my throat so that we could pray for my new friend and her courageous decision. I asked Jesus to restore her physical sight, thanked the Lord for her courage, and asked Him to empower her to tell her classmates about Jesus.

Many people thanked me for preaching that day. They were gracious and reminded me that they were blessed by the sermon. The truth is, however, I was the one who received the blessing that morning. Jesus melted my heart for the lost through a little blind girl who can say: "I was once blind but now I see!"

Don't forget the mission.
