Winter Park Memorial Hospital

Nestled among the oak-shaded, brick-paved streets of one of the most picturesque hometowns in the country, Winter Park Memorial Hospital has continuously served the residents of Winter Park and its surrounding communities for more than 50 years. Chartered in 1951, the hospital has grown from the visionary efforts of a handful of Winter Park residents and community leaders, to a 297-bed acute care facility that is a model of community health and wellness. Over the years the hospital has continually expanded to meet the needs of the community, adding an upscale obstetrics and Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Dr. P. Phillips Baby Place, cancer care at the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute, Winter Park, and state-of-the-art surgery, recovery and rehabilitation at the Florida Hospital Orthopaedic Institute. Last year, over 15,000 patients were treated at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, including 2,400 baby deliveries and 39,000 at the Emergency Department. In addition, over 8,700 surgical procedures were performed. The hospital employs over 1,400 workers including nurses, technicians and support staff. Over 200 doctors practice at the hospital, including a complete in-house staff of some of the most highly-qualified physicians and specialists in the area.

6 Tips to Avoid Heat Exhaustion this Independence Day

Independence Day weekend is just around the corner! It's time to celebrate and have some fun in the sun. Whether you are planning a bar-b-cue, beach day or attending the City of Winter Park's Olde Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, it's important to stay safe, healthy and hydrated. Here are six tips from Florida Blue on how to avoid heat exhaustion during this hot summer.

  1. Stay informed. Stay updated on local weather forecasts so you can plan.
  2. Know the risk. People 65 and older, infants and children, and people with chronic medical conditions are generally more susceptible. Athletes and those with outdoor jobs should be extracautious in the heat.
  3. Keep cool. Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. Avoid direct sunlight. Restrict your outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day - before 10:30am or after 5:30pm. Dress in lightweight and light-colored clothing. Take cool showers or baths. Check on those most at-risk twice a day.
  4. Stay hydrated. Drink more water than usual. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink more fluids.
  5. Know the signs. Signs of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating; weakness; cold pale and clammy skin; fast or weak pulse; nausea or vomiting. The signs of heat stroke: high body temperature above 103 degrees F; hot, red or moist skin; rapid and strong pulse; fainting and possible unconsciousness.
  6. Be prepared. If a medical emergency occurs, move the person to a cool environment and call 911.

Reefer Madness
September 25 - October 3; show times vary
Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College
Reefer Madness is a fast-paced musical satire poking fun at the now infamous 1938 propaganda film of the same name. When we first meet Jimmy and Mary, they are a clean cut high school couple falling in puppy love. Lured by a gnarly crew of marijuana pushers, Jimmy and Mary are soon in all sorts of trouble from hallucinations to homicide! Beneath the campy fun is a timely message about the cost of fear mongering. The playful Reefer Madness is sure to leave you with a case of the giggles (and plenty to talk about). Reefer Madness contains mature themes. Call 407-646-2145 or visit www.rollins.edu/annierussell for tickets and information.
