Although by no means exhaustive, this exhibition seeks to examine the legacy of women artists and abstraction and to understand a fuller, more dynamic story of modern and contemporary art. Through representing women artists together, this exhibition aims not to limit the ways we read the included artists be gender, but attempts to heighten our understanding of the abstract tendencies in American art and to present a broad survey highlighting the historical continuum of abstraction and its ongoing innovation. Certified arborists will also be on site to answer questions and give away an assortment of one-gallon containerized trees for city residents to plant at home. 2015 Winter Park Paint Out
Sunday, April 19 - Saturday, April 25
For this week-long celebration, a selected group of the finest plein air artists will capture the landscapes and landmarks of Winter Park and Orlando with oils, watercolors and pastels painted outdoors with the subject directly in view, rather than in a studio. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the works generated during this week benefit the Albin Polasek Museum. The Polasek's wet-room gallery and gardens will be open free for visitors Sunday through Friday the week of the Paint Out. There will be special events throughout the week, and free painting demonstrations Monday through Friday. The Garden Party will be held on Saturday and is a special ticketed event. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, in association with Rollins College, is pleased to present Anne-Marie O'Connor, author of the award-winning book, The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt's Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer.In her talk, O'Connor will share details from her riveting 2012 book on the dazzling Viennese Jewish society figure who became the subject of an important Gustav Klimt painting confiscated by the Nazis. The decade-long legal battle that led to its successful recovery by her heirs has had profound ramifications in the art world. Admission is free.
