On Tuesday Feb. 18th, Dr. Chuck Podhorsky was warmly greeted by the entire student body of La Jolla High who gathered on the campus green to meet their new Principal. The Mascot, Viktor E. Viking, presented the "key to the school". The students presented Viking gear and the band director, Michael Fiedler, on a tip that Dr. Podhorsky had played clarinet in the marching band in his youth, presented the principal with a framed copy of the La Jolla High Alma Mater for clarinet. After the presentations, the student body, accompanied by the Band and Madrigals sang the Alma Mater. Dr. Podhorsky addressed the crowd of students and faculty eliciting cheers from each class. It was a very upbeat and memorable morning. A new era begins!

Viking Victories
Freshman violist Kiya Klopfenstein was recently accepted into the SDUSD High School Honor Orchestra. To my knowledge this is the first time a LJHS student has EVER been admitted into the honor orchestra.
To qualify for this ensemble, students must be enrolled in one of their school's instrumental music classes (Kiya is in both Viking Band AND Jazz Band) and go through a rigorous audition process. Out of the hundreds of kids who audition (from every school in the district) only a select few are chosen to be in the Honor Band and Honor Orchestra every year. Only the most talented, hard working and dedicated student musicians get past the audition. It truly is an honor for Kiya that she was selected for this group and an honor for our entire school/community that we're being represented on this level.
If you'd like to come support Kiya, the SDUSD High School Honor Concert is Sunday, March 16th at 3:00 PM at Copley Symphony Hall in Downtown San Diego.

The LJHS Archery Teams greets Muir High School
LJHS Archery Team's First Competition
LJHS Archery Team first competition took place on Friday February 14. A scrimmage game against Muir High School took place in the LJHS indoor archery range (the cafeteria). The Olympic Archery in Schools National Director, Keaton Chia, was the range master for the game. The LJHS archers faced a veteran team that had won the California State Championship two years ago. The format for an archery game is a team of ten archers. The four top archers shooting one-on-one with the top archers of the opposing school. Then two teams of three archers face off against two teams of three from the other school. At the end of the shooting, the score was tied. A tied score means each of the ten archers on each team fired one arrow. The team with the highest total won the meet. At the end of firing, the score was LJHS 79 and Muir 58, leading to a win for the LJHS Archery team. The archery team is lead by physics teacher Martin Teachworth. The assistant coaches are LJHS parents Ben Forozoon and Scott Olson, alumni and coach Matthew Teachworth and Bette Lynn Teachworth. The official season begins on Thursday, February 20, against High Tech High School in Chula Vista.

The "Vision 20|20 Forums" will be sessions to provide input on what is working, what could be improved upon, and how will the district and community work together to accomplish the district's Vision 2020. The answers to these questions will help chart the course of California's second-largest school district.
The "Vision 2020 Forums: What Kinds of Schools Do We Want" series offer parents, staff, students, and community members an opportunity to give input to the superintendent and the board members on priorities for our students and schools.
"These forums will yield a clear and collective sense of our district-wide long-term priorities," said Superintendent Cindy Marten. We look forward to continued stakeholder engagement beyond these forums as we work together to create quality schools in every neighborhood.
San Diegans are encouraged to attend the meeting in their Sub-district but can attend any of the meetings listed below.
PLEASE NOTE: The Vision 20-20 Forum for Sub-District B scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 18, has been postponed. A replacement date has not yet been determined.

(prepared by Linda Dowley)
Seniors - Tom Petty sang, "the waiting is the hardest part" - and that can certainly be the case as you wait to hear from colleges. My advice to you is to not sit idle - use this time wisely, certainly in terms of continuing to work hard in high school, as colleges do want to see your senior grades remain strong. Additionally, if you have been deferred in an early round, hopefully you have contacted the regional admissions representative for that college to let them know any additional information - particularly if you have received a recent accolade, appointment or award. You want to make sure they consider that when making their final decision. Even if you have no significant news to report, you can contact them to ask if they need additional information and let them know you are interested in their school. Just don't become a pest or stalk them, no matter how much you hope to attend their college, as that will certainly work against you. Lastly, since it is February and you will want to visit your top choice schools before making YOUR final decision, begin to think about how to structure a trip over spring break. Obviously, you don't want to spend a great deal of time planning a trip to a certain school, only to find out you haven't been accepted. However, if there are schools where you are admitted, definitely make plans to visit before making your final choice - and schedule an overnight stay, if at all possible (I wrote about that previously). Don't be impatient - the answers will be here within six weeks. Enjoy your senior year and don't do anything to jeopardize your college admission.
SPECIAL NOTE TO SENIORS REGARDING MID-YEAR REPORTS - If you have applied to colleges which require a mid-year report (most private colleges do) you MUST see Ms. Solberg. If you have not seen her yet to order mid-year reports, you are late! See her before school, at lunch or after sixth period.
Juniors - Last week I wrote about SAT Subject Tests which are still required or recommended at many colleges. I hope you are keeping those tests in mind and have registered for them as part of your personal testing plan. And if you haven't yet mapped out your plan for when to take your big college admission exams (SAT or ACT) please do so now. Go online and check dates - and register to take one of each during your junior year - remember, all colleges will accept either one. After you have an official test under your belt for both the SAT and ACT, you can decide which one you prefer - or the one where you have scored higher (since I'm not sure most students "prefer" either test). Then, study over the summer, and take the one you identified as the lesser of two evils, again in the fall of your senior year. Colleges will usually accept scores of tests taken until December. However, if you are planning to apply Early Decision, check to see what that college's requirements are and get your testing taken care of in accordance with their deadlines. And if all of this talk of standardized college entrance exams brings too much anxiety, check out the colleges listed on the website for the National Center for Fair and Open Testing - www.fairtest.org. There you will find over 800 colleges which do not require standardized tests, or do not consider them as significant admission criteria. So, if you cannot bear take an SAT or ACT, know that you will still have college options!
