Russ Lanthorne, La Jolla High teacher and tennis coach in the late 1960's and 1970's has passed away. The teams that he coached were loaded with talent, including Chico Hagey, Raul Ramirez, and John Holladay. His teams were legendary. They were so good, that for practice they played USC Stanford and UCLA. Most of his players had great years as college players and also on the Pro tour.
He will be greatly missed. |

College Prep Corner....
(prepared by Linda Dowley)
SENIORS - We are on the home stretch with UC and CSU deadlines on November 30. Please, please, please do not wait until November 30 to hit the submit button. If you are still polishing up your essays for the University of California, here are two useful links you can access by clicking here and here.
Additionally, there are many private schools which have December 1 deadlines, so don't let those sneak up on you. And since those deadlines fall on not only a weekend, but a holiday weekend, get any school-related questions answered NOW since no one will be answering phones at LJHS next week!
SENIOR PARENTS - After your students have submitted their applications, the next big thing will be submitting forms for financial aid. I sincerely hope that the students have filled out the applications on their own - but the financial aid forms are usually the parents' responsibility, as the information requested is complex. Please plan to attend the Financial Forms Workshop on January 9 from 6-7:00 p.m.in Parker Auditorium. You will receive step-by-step information about how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is required by most colleges for the awarding of need-based financial aid - and by many colleges for receipt of merit aid.
JUNIORS - Last week I suggested you research colleges online by going to the college's website and looking up programs which might be of interest to you. If you think a college will merit further consideration from you, be sure to "sign up" to receive additional information from them. Sometimes, joining their email information list is simple and the "sign up" button is well-marked. Other times, it can be tricky to find - maybe under the "visit us" tab or under "admissions" information. When you find it, you will enter your email address and periodically, they will send you tidbits about their school. SO, a word about the email address you choose: if your current email address is cute, silly or vulgar, open a new one - a simple and appropriate one containing possibly your first initial and last name. Make that the email address you use to communicate with colleges. And then, you need to check this email address - and will need to do so more and more frequently as your college season arrives. By signing up to be on a college's information list, you are taking the first step in demonstrating your interest in them. Make sure you make a good first impression by having an appropriate email address.
ALL STUDENTS - A quick college-related follow-up to last week's informative parent program "Navigating the Teen Years" where the legal ramifications of inappropriate teen behavior was discussed. On college applications, there is a place where you are asked whether you have been the focus of disciplinary action. You (or your counselor) must report any infractions which have resulted in suspension or legal action. Additionally, over 1/3 of college admissions personnel reported checking a student's social media, and when they found things which they considered negative or inappropriate, you can be sure it swayed their decision whether to admit or deny an applicant. This applies not only to college admission, but to scholarships as well. Please be aware that your behavior can have very real, long-term consequences so please use good judgment - both in the real world, and in the virtual world of social media.

The AP Literature seniors in Mr. Morgan's classes will be presenting original narrative poems and short stories to the public at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Thursday, November 21 from 5:30 -7:00 p.m. These pieces were written in response to the multimedia installation Lost in the Memory Palace: Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, two Canadian artists whose works, according to MCASD, "emphasize the aural and visual experiences that transport the viewer to other realms of consciousness. Their work is highly scripted, meticulously detailed, and often cinematic in scope, breaking down distinctions between fiction and everyday reality." Attendance is free for LJHS students and their guests. An 'Zine featuring student poems and stories will be available at the museum the night of the exhibition. Suggested dress code for presenting LJHS students is business casual.

Holiday Gift Drive
It's time for the annual La Jolla High Holiday Gift Drive. Sponsored by Family Matters, a community outreach program in San Diego, we will be donating gifts to families in need this year. The giving tree will be up in the office lobby this week.
-Please stop by and take an ornament - or 2 or 3! -Each ornament is labeled with the name, age, sex, size and gift wish of a child. -There are $10, $15 and $wow gifts available. -The beautiful hand made ornament is yours to keep! -Please return the new, unwrapped gift with the gift tag and receipt attached to the barrels located in the office.
Families have been especially hit hard this year and food cards are also appreciated. If you like, you can include a food card with your gift, or drop any gift cards in the red vase at the front counter in the office.
Note: Family Matters is a non-profit organization, so your gift is tax deductible. If you need a receipt or letter for tax purposes, please let me know.
Last year we were able to provide 68 gifts for families here in San Diego. Let's try to beat that this year and remember our neighbors who are in need.
The tree will be up in the office lobby the week before Thanksgiving. Get your ornament early and shop over the Thanksgiving break!
The last day to drop off gifts will be Tuesday, December 17.
If you have any questions, please contact: Cinthia Allen, 619-318-0279

LJHS Blood Drive needs
your help.
The La Jolla High School Blood Drive Club sponsors four blood drives a year. The blood drives serve to develop a sense of community and help others in San Diego County needing blood. LJHS students can earn grants for the school and scholarships for students by meeting the goals established by the San Diego Blood Drive.
To meet the goals, blood donors are needed. A new spin this year is anyone donating blood between Tuesday December 3 and Tuesday December 17 at any San Diego Blood Bank facility may inform the nurses that donation should be credited to the La Jolla High School blood drive.
Every donation not only helps save a life, but will help the Blood Drive Club meet the established goals. Many in our community are already blood donors. If you are one or wish to become one, make a donation and be sure to direct it to the LJHS Blood Drive.
