210 Lives Touched by October 1st Blood Drive
The first blood drive of the school year, which took place on October 1st, was a success!  We surpassed our goal of 66 units with 70! The Blood Drive Club would like to extend a huge thank you to all the donors, who collectively managed to touch 210 lives with their donations.
The next blood drive will take place December 10th.

Congrats to the Girls Golf Team on completing a phenomenal season having gone undefeated in the Western League of the San Diego City Conference. The final week of conference play concluded this week at the La Jolla Country Club.  On Tuesday Erin Szabo shot a 40 and Waverly Whiston shot 41 to lead the team to a victory over UCHS.  On Thursday, Madeleine Garay posted a 37, Marisa Liang shot a 39, and Rebecca Ryan shot her season low score of 40 to help lead the team over SDHS. The Lady Vikings now head to the City Conference Championship at Balboa Golf Club on Oct. 22nd where they will be favored to defend their championship title from last year. Go Vikings!

The College Board hosted its AP Workshop on our campus on Saturday. Four hundred teachers visited our campus as Students!  Many thanks to our PTA catering crew chaired by
Karen Odmark and Blair Moses!  We were also very proud of our Link Crew students who were on hand to give directions and help in many ways.

So proud of our student athletes who volunteered for the Inspiring
the Challenged Athletes Triathlon.

Point Loma Pointers Retain "The Shoe" in Friday's Dogfight 44-24
The tradition began on a rainy night 50+ years ago.  A single shoe was left on the muddy field.  The victors grabbed the shoe as a remembrance of the game - thus began "The Shoe" trophy rivalry between Point Loma and La Jolla.  ...Next year for SURE!!

Taste of La Jolla - Great time was had by all!

College Prep Corner....

(prepared by Linda Dowley)

Seniors -For those of you who are applying either Early Decision or Early Action to at least one college, and have seen Ms. Solberg to activate your transcript request(s), please know that if you update your list to apply to additional schools (or add schools to your "Regular Decision" list) you must update your colleges list on Naviance AND visit Ms. Solberg again to complete your transcript request for those additional schools. Requesting a transcript (and school report) for any school is a two part process and until you have discussed EACH school with the Registrar, your request is not complete.  I also strongly encourage you to check on your colleges' websites regarding deadlines. Due to problems with the Common Application, many colleges have extended their deadlines by a week or more and while it is a good idea to submit your application ahead of the due date, it is wise to take the time to make sure your application is complete and that you are satisfied with your essays and not feel rushed when submitting applications. And remember, if you have specific application questions or have general questions (like you are still unsure about your college list), the LJHS counselors will meet with you individually to discuss your college plans. Sign-ups are posted on their doors, so take advantage of the opportunity to meet with them and get their feedback!

Juniors -Hopefully many of you took the PSAT last Wednesday. Taking the test is excellent practice for the SAT, and if you did any summer test prep, the fall and winter of your junior year are a good time to take the SAT Reasoning Test (as it is formally called). Check on the College Board Website (www.collegeboard.org) for test dates and registration information. Remember that the "other" standardized test, the ACT, is accepted by every college, so if you would like to give that one a try, check www.ACTstudent.org for their test dates and information. You should create a testing schedule for these college entrance tests, and don't forget about SAT Subject tests which are still required at many highly selective colleges. For more information on those one-hour exams, go to www.collegeboard.org.

All Families regarding Financial Aid
Night -
Thank you to those of you who attended last week's informative evening presentation "Paying for College". If any of you were not able to make it, our speaker, Michelle Mai, gives a free talk at the Carmel Valley Library several times each month. Go to her website at www.collegeplanningsource.com and click on "Workshops" for dates and times.
Lunchtime workshops for Seniors are Tuesday,
October 22 & 29

Please bring your lunch to Parker Auditorium (the PTA will supply cookies). Learn the art of finalizing your college list and getting your paperwork through the office; what to expect from a college interview; what to look for in a college visit; tips for writing the best possible essay and more! The final session (October 29) will cover Community College; trade schools/vocational programs; Gap year programs and Military enlistment. Everyone needs some level of post-high school education weather four-year college or job training. Please attend these lunchtime sessions to get the information you need to be successful - whatever your path.

Report from GATE Meeting
(prepared by Christie Ritter, LJHS GATE Rep.)

The GATE Department has a new director, Maria Nichols. Nichols spoke about her role in the newly reorganized Office of Advance Studies and School Innovation. She will oversee the GATE Program. She told parents at the GATE District Advisory Council on Oct. 14 that GATE strategies will be implemented widely as the new Common Core curriculum is developed and used over the coming years. Common Core will offer the prospect of improving the classroom experience for high-ability students in significant ways, Nichols said.

Rhonda Zawadzki, resource teacher in the Office of Advance Studies, told parents that students who take the PSAT test twice do better the second time. She explained that this is the reason that the San Diego Unified School District covered the cost for all district 10th graders to take the test this year. She urged parents to look at their children's PSAT scores when they are released and use the tool that will come with the scores called "My College Quick Start." Zawadzki said it is a predictive tool, which gives information on how successful a student may be in taking AP classes.

The GATE department will continue to bring in experts from around the country to speak to parents and provide professional development for teachers through its Distinguished Lecture Series. This year's dates and speakers are:
Dec. 11 - Dr. Ron Beghetto "Creativity - What Every Parent Needs to Know"
Jan. 15 - College Admissions Officers and College Board Representatives - "The Journey to College: Why K-12 Matters"
Feb. 12 - Dr. Sandra Kaplan - "The Intellectual Struggle"
May 21 - Dr. Richard Cash - "Supporting Your Child to Success: Four Critical Factors in Learning"

All lectures will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Eugene Brucker Education Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal St., San Diego, CA 92103

Parents are urged to attend the next GATE District Advisory Council meeting to hear Superintendent Cindy Marten speak about her plan for GATE and to take questions. The meeting will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18 at the Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress St., San Diego, CA 92110
