Conquer the Cuts is our largest Fundraiser for the Foundation of La Jolla High School.
You should have received a letter in the mail from us last week asking for your participation. La Jolla High School has a long tradition of providing an excellent education for all students. La Jolla High remains one of the premier high schools in San Diego, California and the Country. However, maintaining this tradition has become more difficult each year. Every year we are asked to fund items to support the academic success of our children. We have been successful due to the generosity of our parents, students, alumni and community.
The goal for our 2013 Fall Giving Campaign
"Conquer the Cuts"
is $150,000.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
Contributions at all levels are greatly needed and appreciated. You can make your tax deductable donation by going to our website at www.LJHS.sandi.net/Foundation.

Important Programs - "Paying for College" presentation on Oct. 17th from 6-7 p.m. & Lunchtime Workshops for Seniors begin on Oct. 8th
Lunchtime workshops for seniors begin next Tuesday, October 8 and will take place each of the following Tuesdays in October. Please bring your lunch to Parker Auditorium (the PTA will supply cookies). Learn the art of finalizing your college list and getting your paperwork through the office; what to expect from a college interview; what to look for in a college visit; tips for writing the best possible essay and more! The final session (October 29) will cover Community College; trade schools/vocational programs; Gap year programs and Military enlistment. Everyone needs some level of post-high school education weather four-year college or job training. Please attend these lunchtime sessions to get the information you need to be successful - whatever your path.
Paying for College - October 17 - 6:00-7:00 pm - Parker Auditorium
Parents and students, learn what you need to know about paying for college. With the total sticker price of four years at a private college/university approaching $240,000 (or more), everyone can use information on financial aid and strategies to make college affordable. Please attend this informative evening with a college financial planning specialist who can explain the pluses and minuses of 529 plans; the role of the FAFSA and CSS Profile; the pitfalls of PLUS loans and UGMA (and UTMA) accounts and how to best position yourself to receive merit aid. This program is geared for seniors, but parents of all students are welcome to attend and will find the information helpful in planning for college.

College Prep Corner....
(prepared by Linda Dowley)
Parents of Seniors - If you have students applying to private colleges which require the CSS Profile for financial aid (many do want that in addition to the FAFSA), it is "live" today. Click here for more information. Remember that the Profile is a "first come, first served" process where colleges start giving away money based on the profile applications as they are received, so the sooner you can file, the better. The FAFSA will not be live until January 1, but you'll want to jump on that one as well once it is released online. Seniors - October 1 marks all sorts of exciting beginnings. It is the day when CSU and UC applications are "live". For the California State Universities, you can fill out and begin submitting your applications now, with the final deadline being November 30. For University of California schools, you can create an account and begin filling out your application, but applications cannot be submitted it until November 1 - and their final deadline for submission is also November 30. With ALL applications, please remember that the final deadline is not the due date! In other words, please submit your applications earlier than the final deadline. Create a due date for yourself which is at least a week prior to the final submission deadline (two weeks is preferable). That way, you will have a cushion against any last minute glitches.
Juniors - The PSAT is coming up! As a Junior, you need to sign up and pay for it in the financial aid office (before school, at lunch or after school). In your Junior year, this test qualifies you for the National Merit Scholarship as a semi-finalist or a finalist, or for status as a Commended Scholar - all of which are terrific honors to put on a college application. It is also a great preparation for the "real" SAT reasoning test. Most of you took the PSAT as sophomores, and if you still have the results, I encourage you to take some time to review last year's test and look online (www.collegboard.org) for additional practice questions. The test will be administered at LJHS on October 16 and the last day to sign up and pay is October 11 - so please sign up now!
Freshmen and Sophomores - Early in your high school career is a great time to look for activities you can enjoy all through your high school years. I wrote about this last week for juniors, but the truth of the matter is, if you are going to find your niche or passion, and then display leadership there, you need to begin looking early. There are a ton of clubs and activities at LJHS. If you are interested in sports, by all means, pursue one (or more) which interest you - both within LJHS and outside. I know a young man who participated for one season on the wrestling team, the diving team, the lacrosse team, did fencing and finally discovered his true passion in martial arts. If sports are not your thing, how about music or art? Or one of the community service or academic clubs or teams on campus? Check out the Interact Club or Academic League - or any of the MANY other clubs on campus. Get involved, make new friends and challenge yourself. This is not just to find something that will look good on a college application (although that can be a nice byproduct). This is to make your high school experience more enjoyable and more meaningful for you!

The First La Jolla High School Blood Drive
Exciting news about helping the LJHS Blood Drive Club gather units toward winning the
county contest and earning grant money.
The Blood Drive Club needs your help. The first LJHS blood drive of the year takes place on Tuesday, Oct 1, in the Little Gym. LJHS has been one of the top contenders for grant monies from the San Diego Blood Bank. The award is given to schools that raise the most donations for that size of school and meeting goals established by the blood bank. Over the last few years the grant has helped pay for student field trips and special opportunities.
You may want to help but not be able to donate at LJHS on Tuesday, October 1. However anyone donating blood at a San Diego Blood Bank Center between September 23 and October 5 that tells the staff that the donation should be credited to La Jolla High School account #LJHS will have the units count toward our goal.
There are many LJHS parents, alumni, friends and family that are eligible to donate blood. Tell as many adults as possible. Encourage them to tell friends and family and get as many of them to donate to help reach our goal by donating at a San Diego Blood Bank Center between September 23 and October 5 and asking for the donation count towards LJHS.
Thank you for your support.

MUSIC Department Rummage Sale...
On November 2nd and 3rd the LJHS Viking Band (along with the Muirlands Bands and Orchestras) will be holding its annual Rummage Sale outside the front door and in the lobby of Parker Auditorium on Nautilus St.
All proceeds from this event jointly benefit the LJHS Viking Band Boosters help to fund music classes at Muirlands - these are funds we rely on to continue offering these great programs to La Jolla students. The sale has been a huge hit in the past but we need your help to get it going. Please consider donating any of your used/unwanted items to the sale - we'll take almost anything from sporting goods to appliances, from clothing to toys/games, from kitchenware to books, from electronics to tools (there's a market for anything!). Donations are currently being stored in the band room (804) and donations can be itemized as a tax write off for you. If you have something you might like to donate, please contact Mr Michael Fiedler (Director of Instrumental Music at LJHS and Muirlands) at mfiedler@sandi.net to set up a time to drop items off (help unloading large objects is available!)
If you can't donate, please consider coming to the sale and checking out our wares! The sale will take place on Saturday November 2nd and Sunday November 3rd from 6am-12pm in front of and in the Parker Auditorium Lobby, LJHS, 750 Nautilus Street. Thanks for your support!
