College Prep Corner....

(prepared by Linda Dowley)

Seniors -

La Jolla High Counselors visited every senior English class yesterday to give a presentation regarding the college application process. Students were given a packet of information which included a senior year timeline, advice on writing UC admissions essays and a sample organizational grid. Please review the information with your student, and discuss any questions - and use this as another opportunity to talk about college and your expectations for both the process and the outcome. As a first item on both the student and parent "to do" lists, please log in to Naviance and complete the parent and student information surveys found under the "About Me" tab. This is the information the counselors will use as they write letters of recommendation for your student. Also, if your student is considering applying to private colleges which use the CSS profile for financial aid, please go to www.collegeboard.org for more  information. The forms can be submitted beginning October 1, and aid is offered on a "first come, first served" basis, so it pays to complete and submit the forms as soon as you can.

Juniors -I was asked recently about what colleges are looking for in terms of extracurriculars from students. The truth is, they are looking for a bit of everything. By that, I mean they want an incoming class that includes students passionate about music, volunteering, yoga, sports, cooking - whatever! They want doers and leaders - students who have been involved with a club, a job, an organization, a sport and have shown leadership during their involvement. They want students who have made a positive impact in their community - and will bring their energy to the college community as well. I'm certainly not suggesting you cast about madly in order to find something that will "look good" on your college application and sign up; I'm suggesting that you embrace something you already enjoy. Colleges are looking for students who will bring an enthusiasm to their college, so if you haven't done anything to make your high school a better place or found a way to share what you are passionate about - now is the time.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE YEARBOOK ADVISOR,
MS. LeCREN:

Last year we sold out of yearbooks. There are a few students and staff members out there who would like to buy a 2013 yearbook. We are going have a one-day sale of unclaimed yearbooks on a first come, first served basis on Tuesday, September 24, starting at 7:00 AM, at the financial office. Students must come in person to purchase a yearbook, with their student ID card and a check or cash for $100. No online purchases can be made. For students who arrive by school bus, and who do not have the ability to "camp out early" to get a good place in line, please contact Ms. LeCren in Room 513 BEFORE the day of the sale, so she can take care of you. There are approximately 15-20 yearbooks that are available.

To avoid this problem in the future, please pre-order your yearbook for $70 before December; that's when we decide how many yearbooks to order. If you order by December, you are guaranteed to get a yearbook.

NOTE: Seniors DO NOT pre-order yearbooks; they are part of senior dues.
