2016 Alumni Weekend Celebration: April 1,2,3

Alumni Weekend News
by Jamie Lemisch, director, Alumni Relations

Nominations for the inaugural Blindness and Low Vision Studies Alumnus of the Year award are being accepted now through Friday, March 18, 2016.

What are your student memories?

One of the highlights for reunion class members who attend the annual Celebration and Awards Dinner is the reunion slide show. Each year the slide show is updated to feature the classes celebrating milestone reunion anniversaries. This year's anniversary classes are those ending in '1s and '6s.         Those class members are invited to send us their memorable photos to be included in the slide show. Email your high resolution image file to alumni@salus.edu with the subject line "Reunion Photo" by March 25th to be included.
Alumni Weekend CE Programs
Join us for an evidence-based approach to patient care as Salus University faculty and invited experts tackle complicated clinical cases and integrated approaches to improving patients' health outcomes.  Then break into smaller, discipline-specific (optometry, audiology, physician assistant, speech-language pathology) sessions for two hours of additional continuing education.
Profession-specific continuing education credit will be given for all offerings pending approval.  For more information call 215.780.1382, or email CEregistration@salus.edu.
Salus Community Mourns Johnny Harris
The Salus community is mourning the loss of security officer Johnny Harris, who passed away on February 23, 2016. An easy-going, welcoming presence at The Eye Institute, Johnny always greeted faculty, students, staff and patients with a smile and made a point of saying goodbye to everyone as they left the building.
A former physical education teacher and a retired Philadelphia Police Department sergeant, Johnny also made what many considered to be the best BBQ ribs around and he would bring them to TEI on the weekends when he was on duty. Born in Georgia, Johnny moved to Philadelphia with his family and graduated from Gratz High School in 1971. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC.
The Salus community will remember Johnny's smile and the way he listened to what was said to him. A well-loved member of the Salus community, Johnny Harris had a rare presence that let people know he was concerned about them and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife, Vernessa Pinckney-Harris, his mother, Martha, his son, Damon Lavendar, three grandchildren and five siblings, along with others in his extended family.

Remembering Dr. Gus Iatesta
The Salus University community was saddened by the passing of Dr. A. "Gus" Michael Iatesta '52, emeritus member of the Board of Trustees and former chairman of the Board, on February 26.
Dr. Iatesta was passionate about his family, his profession, his patients and PCO, according to Dr. Thomas L. Lewis, the University's immediate past president, who worked closely for years with Dr. Iatesta and considered him a good friend. "Gus was an amazing person," he said. "He was so proud of how far PCO (Pennsylvania College of Optometry, which established Salus University in 2008) had come from when he was a student under Albert Fitch."   (read more)
