New Salus Honor Society Holds First Induction

While students, the Occupational Therapy (OT) Classes of 2014 and 2015 initiated the process of becoming a chapter of Pi Theta Epsilon chapter, the national honor society for Occupational Therapy students. In February, the University's Delta Mu chapter of Pi Theta Epsilon was recognized by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTA) and on September 1, Salus OT faculty and students attended the chapter's first induction ceremony. Read more 
Faculty Development Day

The University's faculty was the center of attention at a reception held in their honor in Hafter Student Center last month. This bi-annual event is hosted by the provost, Dr. Janice Scharre, and is the kick-off for the next day, which is dedicated to faculty development, as faculty members become the students in a series of presentations and discussions.

Dr. Andrew Gurwood, professor, on his contributions to a September 15 article in Review of Optometry on "How to Shop for New Technology."
Dr. Karen Hanson, special consultant for program development;  Dr. Lynn Greenspan, PCO assistant professor; Dr. Bre Myers, OCA assistant professor, on their co-authored article about the University's Veterans Initiative, which was published by  Advance Healthcare for 
Hearing and Speech.

Dr. Barbara Schwartz-Bechet, associate dean, College of Education and Rehabilitation,
on being invited to participate in the 25th anniversary celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in Washington, DC last month.
Dr. Joel Silbert, professor and director, Cornea and Contact Lens Service, The Eye Institute of
Salus University, on the publication of his article,
"GPs: Are You Making Good Use of Diagnostic Fitting Sets?" published in Review of Cornea and Contact Lenses.
Dr. Lauren Sponsellor, assistant professor, Occupational Therapy program, on being named to the Roster of Accreditation Evaluators (RAE) on behalf of the ACOTE Executive Committee. ACOTE is the accrediting body of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Fall Commencement and White Coat Ceremony Speakers Named

The University is pleased to announce the keynote speakers for two significant student events next month.

 Mr. Thomas E. Beeman, Chief Operating Officer, Regional Operations for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, will be the speaker at the fall commencement on Tuesday, October 6 at Congregation Keneseth Israel, Elkins Park, PA.  

On Monday, October 12, Mr.James Hindman, founder of Jiffy Lube International, will be the keynote speaker for incoming students in the Optometry, Audiology, Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology programs 
who will receive their white coats at 
Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, PA.

Annual Giving  Appeal

Each year faculty and staff are invited to support our institution through financial contributions. 

Salus faculty and staff donated more than $80,000 in fiscal year 2015, contributions that included gifts in support of scholarships, classroom dedications, the TEI renovation, and the Annual Fund. 

With the Salus employee appeal currently underway, we anticipate continued generosity from our committed faculty and staff.

The Boards of Trustees at Salus University and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia have agreed to discussions to consider forming a broad strategic partnership that could lead to a merger of the two long-standing educational healthcare institutions. No time table has been set for completion of the talksRead more ... 
Abram Doane Appointed Office of Academic Success Coordinator 

Dr. James Caldwell, dean of Student Affairs, has announced the appointment of 
Abram Doane, MA, MHA, JD, as coordinator of the Office for Academic Success (OAS) for the University. 
   Mr. Doane will work with individual students, faculty and staff to ensure that opportunities at Salus University are accessible and equally available to all qualified students. He will lead the University's efforts towards universal design and to offer each student  equal access to in Salus programs, activities and services. Read more
Inaugural Speech-Language Pathology Class Welcomed

After two years of hard work and preparation by the Department of Speech-Language Pathology chaired by Dr. Carolyn Mayo, the University's inaugural class of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) students were welcomed on August 17. The class of 25 is pictured above with SLP faculty.
 The clinical facility for the department, the Salus University Speech-Language Institute (SLI), will hold an Open House on Thursday, October 15. The SLI is located on the University's Elkins Park campus.

New Student Leaders Announced
The Executive Board of the University's Student Council announced the new Salus Class Council officers. The newly elected officers will serve their classmates from September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2016. In their announcement to the Salus community, the Executive Board said it was "extremely excited" to begin working with the new officers and predicted a "great year in Student Council."  Read more 
Dr. Uduak Udom '15MPH New President World Council of Optometry 

Salus Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate, Uduak Udom, OD, '15MPH, was installed as president of the World Council of Optometry (WCO) in August. A native of Nigeria and a leader in optometry in Africa who has practiced since 1978, Dr. Udom became a Fellow of both the American Academy of Optometry and Nigerian College of Optometrists in 2006. She was elected president of the African Council of Optometry (AFCO) in 2010, and was the first female to hold that office. New Salus University Health Website 
In addition to the new design and look of the University website (www.salus.edu), there is now a new clinical website (www.salusuhealth.com) which features all of the University's clinical facilities: The Eye Institute (TEI) and its satellites; Pennsylvania Ear Institute (PEI), Speech-Language Institute (SLI) and Salus Institute of Multi-Sensory Rehabilitation (SIMR). PhD Biomedicine Student Receives White Coat 

Ms. Manal Al Harbi (above, second from left),  a student in the University's Biomedicine PhD program, received her white coat in a ceremony in Elkins park in July.
