Salus Hosts Public Health Panel
On January 9, the University's Public Health program and the Montgomery County Health Department co-hosted a Salus Time Speakers Series event entitled, "Ebola and Infectious Diseases: Community Preparedness." A panel of experts shared information and updates about the ebola virus and other infectious diseases with an audience of local health and social work professionals as well as Salus faculty, staff and students.

Representing the University were Dr. Michael H. Mittelman, president, Dr. Anthony F. Di Stefano, Public Health programs director, John Gaal, MHA, FACHE, vice president of Clinical Operations and Lili Liang '16OD/MPH. Officials from the Montgomery County Health Department were Dr. Joseph DiMino, director of health/medical director, C. Michael Baysinger, MPH, deputy director, Personal Health Services, and Ms. Julie Paoline, MA, division director, Communicable Diseases. Mark Ross, southeastern regional representative for the Hospital Association of America, was the final expert on the panel.

With a recurring theme of "facts, not fear," the experts explained what preparations the county's health department and area hospitals have completed and how staff is trained in the event of an ebola patient's presence in the region. Many in the audience were surprised to learn that Pennsylvania receives 70% of all US arrivals from West Africa. Within Pennsylvania, 80% of those arrivals go to Philadelphia and Delaware counties. On the day of the seminar Montgomery County was monitoring 17 arrivals from West Africa for the required 21 days and there were 165 people being monitored in the state.

Ms. Liang, who spent several months in Liberia in 2012 while on a mission researching malaria, was able to give the audience a more personal view of the physical conditions and cultural practices that have contributed to the spread of ebola in that country.

This event was the fourth in a series of expert speakers on various topics. "Salus Time" was created to bring the University community together for scholarly functions, providing a forum for the discussion of timely topics. Some Salus Time Speakers Series events are open to the public, while others are for internal audiences. In late December, a representative from the FBI gave a presentation to Salus faculty, students and staff about cyber-security, its current dangers and best preventative measures. Video of presentations.

New Look Coming
For more than a year the University has been involved in an ongoing strategic planning process that will chart our course over the next three to five years. Additionally, we have conducted surveys and multiple focus groups with many Salus students, faculty, alumni, and staff in order to gain information, ideas, opinions and feedback about the University's website, social media and print materials. We thank all of those who participated in the process and who generously shared what Salus means to them. The results will soon be seen in our new and refreshed brand, an updated University logo and the look of our website, publications and clinical facilities. The changes will make a powerful promise about the Salus commitment to health and wellbeing.

We're excited to take this important initiative to solidify our position as leaders in the professions we serve and to confirm the Salus mission to provide unparalleled service to all of our patients and clients. Watch for our new look - and make sure to tell us what you think!

Bench Dedication Program
The University recently began the Salus University Bench Dedication Program, a perfect way to remember someone special, honor your profession, or simply support the education of the next generation of health professionals. The benches are made of solid, durable wood that will last for at least 25 years and provide comfortable seating on the grounds of the Elkins Park campus for students and visitors.  For more information.

Salus Honors Service Awardees

In December, the University's annual holiday party for faculty and staff took place in the Hafter Student Community Center. Amidst the holiday decorations and following tradition, President Mittelman and members of President's Council donned aprons and served trays of hors d'oeuvres to the guests, who enjoyed the hors d'oeuvres almost as much as the opportunity to visit with co-workers in a relaxed, social setting.

This year, Dr. Mittelman presented the University's service awards to 36 employees whose combined years of service to PCO/Salus totaled 695 years. The awards ceremony was followed by a buffet lunch provided by Williamson's Culinart. For a list of awardees.

The students' goal is to raise $1,000 as a team.

MuckFest MS 2015 will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 30 at Ellis Preserve, 3855 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073.
