Dr. Verma To Be Honored  By AAO  Dr. Satya Verma at AOA June 2009 
For Dr. Satya Verma '75, professor and associate director of the PCO externship program, the past few years have been quite a period for well-deserved recognition by his peers and the optometric profession.   
   At their annual meeting in October, the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) will present Dr. Verma with their 2014 Life Fellowship Award.

Landmark Audiology Legislation
in Pennsylvania Signed 
The first significant update of audiology licensure in Pennsylvania since 1984 was signed by Governor Corbett on July 2, 2014. The Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists Licensure Act (Act 106 of 2014) contains requirements reflective of national standards, updates terminology and, beginning January 1, 2015, will require all applicants for licensure to have a doctoral degree in audiology.

       According to Dr. Victor Bray, Osborne College of Audiology (OCA) dean, Salus OCA faculty member Dr. Sherman Lord '10 was instrumental in getting the legislation passed in his capacity of vice president of Governmental Affairs for the Pennsylvania Academy of Audiology (PAA).

Optometry Scholars Program Welcomes First Students 
The University's Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) Scholars Program is the nation's first accelerated Doctor of Optometry degree program. The first cohort of 10 students were welcomed into this highly selective, continuous, three-year program in July and are scheduled to graduate in June 2017.    Read more...

Philadelphia was the focus of the American Optometric Association (AOA) in late June, as members arrived for their annual Optometry's Meeting. This year's meeting at the Pennsylvania Convention Center provided the opportunity for many alumni, faculty and students to meet locally at a national conference.

    The University hosted a fundraising cocktail reception at the National Constitution Center on June 27, where more than 300 attendees mingled amidst banners, exhibits, soaring ceilings and walls of windows showcasing nearby Independence Hall.  

     After a short Salus video and a warm welcome by Salus president, Dr. Michael H. Mittelman, the annual Alumni Association Awards were presented by Kenneth Savitski, OD '87, president of the Alumni Association. The 2014 honorees are Rita R. Chaiken, AuD '03, Audiology Alumna of the Year, who received her award at the American Academy of Audiology annual conference in April ; Glenn S. Corbin, OD '82, Albert Fitch Memorial Alumnus of the Year; Ms. Marcia Shaull, Public Service Award; Felix M. Barker, II, OD, MS, FAAO and Pierrette Dayhaw-Barker, PhD, Distinguished Service Awards; and Anthony F. Di Stefano, OD '73, MPH, MEd, Special Recognition Award.    Read more about honorees...

Salus PA Student Elected to National Board 
At this year's national meeting of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), then first-year student
Bethany Rohrs '15PA represented the University's PA Program in the Student Academy of the AAPA Assembly of Representatives (AOR). The Student Academy was created to represent the unique views and needs of PA students. The AOR is their governing body and is comprised of one representative from the student society of each Physician Assistant program nationwide. Read more....
Dr. Scheiman Appointed Dean
Dr. Mitchell Schieman
Mitchell Scheiman, OD, has been appointed dean of Research at Salus University. The announcement was made by University provost, Dr. Janice Scharre, who noted, "Dr. Scheiman's dedication and experience with research, along with his strong administrative leadership will be an inspiring asset to the Salus Research Department."  Read more...

William A. Monaco, OD, PhD, has been appointed associate dean for Graduate Programs in Biomedicine (GPBI). The announcement was made by University provost, Dr. Janice Scharre and was effective July 1.

     In making her announcement to the Salus community, Dr. Scharre said, "Dr. Monaco's extensive academic and clinical leadership experience extends a wealth of knowledge to this position. He brings distinctive leadership skills to GPBI, which will allow Salus University to build on the foundational work of Dr. Pierrette Dayhaw-Barker."   Read more ...

The Eye Institute welcomed a new class of resident doctors on July 1. These optometrists will obtain advanced clinical competencies in one of several specialties during their year at TEI.
   Please welcome Dr. Kriti Bhagat '14 (Cornea and Contact Lens); Dr. Jared Burd '14 (Primary Care); Dr. Laine Higa (Primary Care); Dr. Genna Higbee (Primary Care); Dr. Alicia Kim (Primary Care); Dr. Bisant Labib '14 (Primary Care); Dr. Nicole Maierhoffer '14 (Low Vision); DrSiva Meiyeppen (Pediatrics/Vision Therapy); Dr. Caitlin Miller (Pediatrics/Vision Therapy); and Dr. Haley Parikh (Primary Care). 
Audiology Workshops Down Under
Dr. Giri Sundar, Salus University director of Distance Education for Osborne College of Audiology (OCA), was in Australia in late June and early July to oversee two OCA workshops that were co-sponsored by Attune of Brisbane.

       The two workshops - Vestibular and Balance Disorders, and Electrophysiology in Audiology - were originally designed to fulfill the attendance requirement for two hands-on OCA workshops for all students enrolled in the University's international Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree bridge program. All Salus OCA workshops are open to any practitioners in addition to Salus OCA students. (Electrophysiology workshop participants pictured above).
