Massachusetts Society of Clinical Oncologists (MSCO)

Quality and Innovation Grant Proposals

The purpose of the MSCO Quality and Innovation grant is to improve the care of patients in the state of Massachusetts living with a diagnosis of cancer. Funding will be provided for an individual(s) or group(s) seeking to improve the delivery of cancer care, the quality of cancer care, treatmentof cancer or comfort of patients suffering from cancer. Applicants must be a member of MSCO.

Amount: $20,000 for 2 years

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)

Scholar Award

LLS is a national health agency dedicated to the conquest of hematologic malignancies and relevant premalignant conditions. Applicants must be highly qualified investigators who have shown a capacity for independent, sustained original investigation in the field of hematologic malignancies. Applicants should hold an independent faculty-level or equivalent position tenure-track position for less than or equal to 8 years at the time of review (January 1, 2017. Applicants should be the PI on a peer-reviewed research grant from a national agency (R01-level) or other independent source that supports the research costs of proposed work. The Scholar Award is intended to further develop the independent research careers of highly qualified investigators not to support well-established or senior investigators. Applicants may submit only 1 LLS application per cycle.

Amount: $110,000/ year for 5 years

Scholar in Clinical Research Award

The Scholar Award in Clinical Research is intended for highly qualified investigators conducting original, independent applied research, often involving early-stage clinical trials that will advance the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of hematologic malignancies. Applicants must have held an independent position for less than or equal to 10 years as of January 1, 2017. Applicants are expected to have concomitant support for their research from another source or agency and should have a significant history of blood cancer-relevant publications. Applicants may submit only 1 LLS application per cycle.

Amount: $110,000/ year for 5 years

CureSearch for Children's Cancer

Catapult Fund Proof-Of-Concept Award

The CureSearch Catapult Fund will provide funding to support the development of innovative, novel, and promising oncology research into human clinical trials and product commercialization with the ultimate goal of improving clinical outcomes in childhood cancer patients. The Catapult Fund will provide funding for "clinic-ready" projects that are Phase 1 or Phase 2 human clinical trials. Proposed trials may, for example, test novel agents or combinations of agents or therapies. Trials to be considered may also utilize genomic, epigenetic and other molecular "omics" approaches for clinical marker discovery and clinical validation that will translate into diagnosis, prognosis and improved treatment of oncologic disease.

Amount: up to $2,000,000 for 1-2 years

Alpha-1 Foundation

Bridge Grant

The objective of this grant is to provide support for excellent Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) related research projects that have been submitted to and approved by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), but cannot be supported by the available NIH funds. Information derived from Alpha-1 Foundation supported research studies is intended to lead to solicitation of additional, subsequent funds from other agencies such as the NIH.

Amount: $25,000 for 1 year

Alpha-1 Foundation

Pilot and Feasibility Grant

The objective of this grant is to provide funds to encourage the development and testing of new hypotheses and/or new methods in research areas relevant to Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) Deficiency. Proposed work must be hypothesis generating or hypothesis testing, reflecting innovative approaches to important questions in AAT research or development of novel methods, and providing sufficient preliminary data to justify the Foundation's support. Results from Pilot and Feasibility Grants should lead to the submission of applications for funding from other agencies (i.e. NIH).

Amount: $40,000 for 1 year

Alpha-1 Foundation

Research Grants

The objective of this grant is to provide funds to encourage the development of new information that contributes to the understanding of the basic biology of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) expression, and the pathogenesis/management of AAT Deficiency. The Alpha-1 Foundation supports research projects involving basic science, translational and clinical research, and ethical, legal, and social issues. In addition, consideration will be given to those projects that provide insight into the development of information that may contribute to new therapies for AAT Deficiency. The applicant must devote at least 10% effort to the Research Grant.

Amount: $100,000/ year for 2 years

American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)

AACR NextGen Grants for Transformative Cancer Research

The AACR NextGen Grants for Transformative Cancer Research represent the AACR's flagship funding initiative to stimulate highly innovative research from young investigators. This grant mechanism is intended to promote and support creative, paradigm-shifting cancer research that may not be funded through conventional channels. The research can be in any area of basic, translational, or clinical science. At the start of the grant term on July 1, 2017, applicants must hold a tenure-eligible appointment at the rank of assistant professor and have held the assistant professor appointment for no more than three years.

Amount: $450,000 for 3 years

Charles H. Hood Foundation

Child Health Research Awards Program

The intent of the Child Health Research Awards Program is to support newly independent faculty, provide the opportunity to demonstrate creativity, and assist in the transition to other sources of research funding. Grants support hypothesis-driven clinical, basic science, public health, health services research, and epidemiology projects focused on child health. Applicants should have completed their fellowship training at the time of application and be within five years of their first faculty appointment by the funding start date. Applicants are ineligible if, at the time of application, they have combined federal and non-federal funding totaling $450,000 or more in direct costs during the first year of the Hood Award.

Amount: $175,500 for 3 years

Conquer Cancer Foundation

Career Development Award (CDA)

The CDA provides research funding to clinical investigators who have received their initial faculty appointment, as they work to establish an independent clinical cancer research program. This research must have a patient-oriented focus, including a clinical research study and/or translational research involving human subjects. Applicants must be in the first to third year of a full-time primary faculty appointment in a clinical department at an academic medical institution at the time of grant submission.

Amount: $200,000 over 3 years

Elsa U. Pardee Foundation

Research Grant

The Elsa U. Pardee Foundation funds research directed toward identifying new treatments or cures for cancer. The Foundation encourages grant applications for a one year period which will allow establishment of capabilities of new cancer researchers, or new cancer approaches by established cancer researchers. The Foundation particularly welcomes innovative, small-scale, short-term projects which may be difficult to fund elsewhere until some interesting results are obtained. Project relevance to cancer detection, treatment, or cure should be clearly identified. By design, there are no limits set on the grant amount that can be requested. It must be reasonably and clearly supported by the scope of the project outlined in the application

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)

Special Fellow

LLS continues to support talented blood cancer researchers in the early phase of their careers. The Special Fellow Award is for 2 or 3 years, depending on eligibility. Applicants should have between 2 years and 4.5 years of postdoctoral experience as of January 1, 2017. Postdoctoral experience begins on the date of the oral thesis defense (or date of degree conferral, whichever comes first), or at the end of clinical education or training. Time spent in the thesis advisor's laboratory following the thesis defense is considered postdoctoral experience. There is a limit of 1 Fellow application per application cycle for each Sponsor, as well as 1 Special Fellow application per application cycle for each Sponsor. The Sponsor must be the head of the laboratory where the applicant's research will be performed. An applicant's postdoctoral research must be in a laboratory different than where they performed their thesis research. In addition, their Sponsor must be different than their graduate supervisor. Special Fellows must have a recent track record that is directly relevant to blood cancer. No other comparable or better career development award (as measured by the total award amount) may be held prior to, or at the time of the Award start date. This award is meant to help begin the transition to an independent research program.

Amount: $67,000/ year for 2-3 years

Fellow Award

Fellow applicants may come from any scientific discipline, and LLS encourages those from diverse scientific backgrounds to apply. However this award encourages postdoctoral fellows to embark on an academic career involving clinical or fundamental research in hematologic malignancies under a research sponsor's direction. Applicants should have less than or equal to 2 years postdoctoral experience at the time of review (January 1, 2017). Postdoctoral experience begins on the date of the oral thesis defense (or date of degree conferral, whichever comes first), or at the end of clinical education or training. Time spent in the thesis advisor's laboratory following the thesis defense is considered postdoctoral experience. Postdoctoral experience is not defined by the start date in the current laboratory. There is a limit of one Fellow application per application cycle for each Sponsor, as well as one Special Fellow application per application cycle for each Sponsor. The Sponsor must be the head of the laboratory re the applicant's research will be performed. Research must be performed in a laboratory different from where the graduate research and was performed and with a Sponsor different than the graduate mentor. The project proposed, the Sponsor(s) experience, and the applicant's career trajectory should be focused on blood cancer.

Amount: $60,000/ year for 3 years

Thrasher Research Fund

Early Career Awards

The Thrasher Research Fund recognizes that young investigators may find it difficult to remain in pediatric research because of a lack of funding. Therefore, the purpose of this program is to encourage the development of medical research in child health by awarding small grants to new researchers, helping them gain a foothold in this important area. Those eligible to apply include: physicians who are in a residency/fellowship training program, or who completed that program no more than one year before the date of submission of the Concept Paper and postdoctoral researchers who received the doctoral level degree no more than 3 years prior to the date of submission of the Concept Paper. A new investigator who holds a National Institutes of Health (NIH) K award (including a K12 award) or a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) is not eligible to apply. Mentors may have only 1 Thrasher Research Fund Early Career Awardee at a time.

Amount: $25,000 for up to 2 years

Alpha-1 Foundation

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship Grant

The Alpha-1 Foundation is committed to finding a cure for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) Deficiency and to improving the lives of individuals affected by Alpha-1 worldwide. The objective of this grant is to provide support for post-doctoral research fellows who are starting their research careers and are working in the laboratories of established researchers or conducting research with the mentorship of established research. Applicants must indicate a commitment to AAT-related research by focusing 50% of their time to AAT Deficiency research or clinical practice.

Amount: $50,000/year for 2 years

Conquer Cancer Foundation

The YIA provides funding to promising investigators to encourage and promote quality research in clinical oncology. The purpose of this grant is to fund physicians during the transition from a fellowship program to a faculty appointment. Applicants must be a physician in the last 2 years of subspeciality training and within 10 years of obtaining a medical degree. MD/PhD's are eligible if both degrees are completed before the start of the grant. Applicants must have a valid and active medical license in the country where the research will be conducted.

Amount: $50,000 for 1 year

Cancer Research Institute (CRI)

CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The Cancer Research Institute seeks hypothesis-driven, mechanistic studies in both immunology and tumor immunology. Applicants for the CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship Program must be working in areas directly related to cancer immunology. Applicants must have a doctoral degree by the date of award activation and must not have 5 or more years of relevant post-doctoral experience (not including residency). Applicants should not have spent more than 3 years in sponsor's laboratory at start date.

Amount: $175,500 for 3 years
