Internal Funding Dana-Farber-Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC)-The Koch Institute (KI)/Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) The Bridge Project 2015 The Bridge Project is a collaboration between DF/HCC and KI/MIT, designed to bring bioengineering, advanced cancer science, and clinical oncology together to solve today's most challenging problems in cancer research and care. This will be the 5th year of the highly successful Bridge Project, supporting research teams comprised of individuals from both DF/HCC and MIT, who require seed funding to support translational research projects likely to yield results that can be translated into the clinic in the near future. Harvard Medical School (HMS) Harvard Catalyst Program for Faculty Development and Diversity Inclusion (PFDD) Faculty Fellowship PFDD Faculty Fellowship (formerly PFDD Faculty Fellowship) is for Harvard junior faculty, designed to address faculty need for additional support to conduct clinical and/or translational research and to free junior faculty from clinical and teaching demands at a key point in their career development. Faculty Fellows are required to devote appropriate time toward the development of their academic career, to meet regularly with their mentors, and to present at the annual Minority Health Policy Meeting. Applicants must have Harvard appointments at the level of instructor or assistant professor. Applications will also be considered from clinical or research fellows who are in the process of appointment/promotion to instructor and/or assistant professor at Harvard. U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required. Amount: $100,000 over 2 years Deadline: October 14, 2015
Harvard Medical School (HMS) HMS Foundation Funds The HMS Foundation Funds Program administers the nomination process for HMS/HSDM faculty and postdocs for funding opportunities from private foundations that require candidates to be nominated by either HMS or Harvard University. Interested applicants must first apply for the HMS nomination through the HMS Foundation Funds, and a committee will select the final candidates to submit applications to the foundations. For some awards, institutions may receive invitations to submit their own nominations. Applicants at HMS affiliated hospitals should check with their Sponsored Programs/Research Administration representative before submitting an application to the Foundation Funds to ensure that the hospital does not have its own nomination process for an award. Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)-American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Career Development Awards PanCAN-AACR Career Development Awards represent a joint effort to encourage and support junior faculty to conduct pancreatic cancer research and establish successful career paths in this field. At the start of the grant term on July 1, 2016, applicants must hold a full-time faculty position with the title of assistant professor, instructor, research assistant professor, or equivalent, and have completed his or her most recent doctoral degree within the past 11 years. AACR membership is required. Nonmembers interested in this grant opportunity must submit a satisfactory application for AACR active membership by October 8, 2015. Applicants who currently hold an active AACR grant may not apply. Applicants may submit only 1 LOI for PanCAN-AACR Career Development Awards but may concurrently apply for other AACR grants. American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) Discovery Grants ABTA awards support high risk/high impact projects that have the potential to change current diagnostic or treatment paradigms for either adult or pediatric brain tumors. Discovery-driven science and proof-of-concept studies are encouraged to apply, particularly those with no or little history of previous funding. Priority will be given to concepts focused on experimental therapeutics and experimental therapeutics with reduced toxicities. Eligibility ranges from advanced postdoctoral trainees (minimum of 3 years post-doctorate), junior faculty and PI's. Applicants not holding an academic faculty position must identify a project mentor. Applicants must not have received funding at the equivalent of an NIH R01 or higher level, for any project. The Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR) Exploring the Mechanisms for HIV Persistence and the Potential for HIV Eradication amFAR solicits proposals relevant to exploring the mechanisms for HIV persistence and the potential for HIV eradication. amfAR wishes to support basic, pre-clinical, clinical, and especially translational research exploring the mechanisms whereby HIV infection persists; the chronic nature of viral reservoirs and latency; and barriers to the eradication of HIV, with the potential goal of ultimately curing HIV infection. Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) MRA Team Science Award in Acral Melanoma MRA is soliciting proposals that address the gap in translational science; i.e., turning scientific discoveries into tools and/or treatments for high risk individuals and melanoma patients. Successful proposals will offer the potential for translational development that could lead to high impact near-term clinical application in melanoma detection, prevention, diagnosis, staging, or treatment. Awards for team science are designed to foster a collaborative research process and promote transformational melanoma research advances with the potential for rapid clinical translation. Teams may consist of investigators from the same institution, different institutions, and may be international. Each team must include at least 1 Young Investigator as a co-investigator. An applicant may only be the designated Young Investigator on 1 proposal in the team science category. However, a Young Investigator Award applicant may be the designated Young Investigator on 1 team science application. PI's must hold a full-time faculty appointment at the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent). Applicants may serve as PI on only 1 proposal submitted to MRA for any of the mechanisms in this cycle. Amount: $900,000 over 3 years Deadline: LOI; October 12, 2015
American Cancer Society (ACS) Pilot and Exploratory Projects in Palliative Care of Cancer Patients and Their Families This RFA provides funding for investigators performing pilot and exploratory research studies whose purpose is to test interventions, develop research methodologies, and explore novel areas of research in palliative care of cancer patients and their families. The development of the specialty of palliative medicine is a critical step in addressing the unmet needs of patients with serious illness and their families. These grants will generate the pilot data necessary to maximize an investigator's chances of competing successfully for larger grants. Independent investigators at all stages of their career are eligible to apply. Thus, the usual ACS restriction to investigators within the first 6 years of their initial independent research appointment does not apply to this RFA. Amount: $72,000/ year for 1-2 years Deadline: October 15, 2015
American Cancer Society (ACS) The Role of Health Policy and Health Insurance in Improving Access to and Performance of Cancer Prevention, Early Detection, and Treatment Services ACS calls for research that evaluates the impact of the many changes now occurring in the healthcare system with a particular focus on cancer prevention, control, and treatment. Research to be funded by this RFA should focus on the changes in national, state, and/or local policy and the response to these changes by healthcare systems, insurers, payers, communities, practices, and patients. Independent investigators at all stages of their career are eligible to apply. The usual ACS restriction to investigators within the first 6 years of their initial independent research appointment for the Research Scholar grant applicants does not apply to this RFA. 2015 Psychosocial: Family Impact GrantThe Psychosocial: Family Impact Grants are designed for established investigators. Funding will support studies that aim to explain and/or improve psychosocial outcomes of those affected by childhood cancer. These grants are designed to fund researchers who have novel approaches to understanding the psychosocial aspects of pediatric cancer whose proposals will have clinically significant impact. Applicants should be independent investigators with a full-time faculty appointment. Applicants must have demonstrated success in obtaining prior research funding (grants with at least a 2 year funding period) within the field of pediatric cancer from either NIH or other foundations. The project submitted should not overlap with previous award(s). Amount: $300,000 over 3 years Deadline: October 16, 2015 Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) 2015 Psychosocial: Launch GrantThe Psychosocial: Launch Grants are designed for early career researchers within 7 years of receiving their terminal degree. Funding will support studies that aim to explain and/or improve psychosocial outcomes of those affected by childhood cancer. Demonstration of outstanding mentorship and a career plan that shows commitment to pediatric cancer investigation are important components of a successful application. Applicants must have completed all formal training and must have a full-time position that includes research activities devoted to pediatric cancer. Applicants must not currently hold an independent NIH grant (R or P Award). Applicants may currently have a NIH K Award but in this case may not receive any salary support from ALSF as part of this grant application. A research mentor must be clearly identified and the application must document his/her involvement in experimental design and execution, as well as training and mentorship. Amount: $50,000/ year for 2 years Deadline: october 16, 2015 Debbie's Dream Foundation-American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Career Development Award for Gastric Cancer ResearchThe Debbie's Dream Foundation-AACR Career Development Award for Gastric Cancer Research represents a joint effort to encourage and support junior faculty who, at the start of the grant term, will have completed their most recent medical residency or doctoral degree within the past 11 years to conduct gastric cancer research and to establish a successful career path in this field. The research proposed for funding may be basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to gastric cancer, specifically non-Helicobactor pyloriassociated gastric cancer. Any proposals focused on Helicobactor pylori-associated gastric cancer will not be accepted. At the start of the grant term on July 1, 2016, applicants must hold a full-time faculty position with the title of assistant professor, instructor, research assistant professor, or the equivalent. Amount: $75,000/ year for 2 years Deadline: October 20, 2015 Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)-American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Pathway to Leadership GrantPanCAN-AACR Pathway to Leadership Grant represents a joint effort to ensure the future leadership of pancreatic cancer research by supporting outstanding early career investigators beginning in their postdoctoral research positions and continuing through their successful transition to independence.Applicants must hold a full-time, mentored research position, have completed their most recent doctoral degree or medical residency within the past 5 years, and not already have a full-time faculty position.The initial phase of mentored support will allow the applicant time to complete research, publish results, and prepare to bridge to an independent research position. It is expected that during the mentored phase, the recipient will dedicate at least 75% time to completing the proposed research plus additional time fulfilling the career development plan.As part of the application, the applicant must propose a pancreatic cancer research project that will be pursued as a tenure track independent investigator during the second phase of the grant. Amount: $600,000 for 5 years (both phases combined) Deadline: October 27, 2015 Worldwide Cancer Research (formerly known as AICR) Grant Applications Worldwide Cancer Research's goal is to support research that might help reduce the incidence of cancer or improve cancer survival. The foundation awards grants to support fundamental or translational research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of cancer. Only 1 application from the same research group will be accepted in any 12 month period (i.e. 12 months must have passed since the last application), unless the Scientific Advisory Committee invites the submission of a revised application in the next round. The PI will usually be a tenured or tenure-track research group leader. Postdoctoral researchers with more than 3 years postdoctoral research experience are also eligible to apply for a grant. Postdoctoral applicants who are not yet independent researchers must name their group head as co-applicant on the grant. Applicants who choose to submit parallel applications to fund the same project and are offered a grant by both Worldwide Cancer Research and another organiation must choose which grant to accept.
