Internal Funding Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) Claudia Adams Barr Program in Cancer Research Innovative Basic Science Research Program
| J. Wayne and Delores B. Weaver established the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Cancer Research in 1987, in memory of Mrs. Weaver's mother, Claudia Adams Barr. The primary intent of the Claudia Adams Barr Program is to provide funding to DFCI investigators for the development of innovative basic research projects that have not yet received any external peer-reviewed grant support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or similar sources. Barr Awards are designed to support research projects that are innovative and address fundamental questions related to cancer. The request for funds should be limited to support for the initiation of the study and generation of preliminary data needed to submit grant applications for external funding. Established DFCI junior and senior investigators are encouraged to apply. Senior postdoctoral fellows who are within 1-2 years of independence and are conducting independent research on a project that has not achieved external funding in that laboratory may also apply. Only one application for a Barr Award per lab may be submitted for consideration. Labs with existing Barr awardees are eligible to apply for non-concurrent support: applications may be submitted for review and will either be deferred to the next round or, if awarded, will receive funding when the prior award is closed. Applicants who are not eligible for Barr Program funding include Scientist-track investigators and investigators below the level of independent Assistant Professor, who currently receive Career Development Awards, such as K awards. Awards are not available to investigators who already receive substantial funding from the Institute. Summaries may be sent to BARR@dfci.harvard.edu Amount: Up to $200,000/ year for 2 years Deadline: May 1, 2015

Harvard University Harvard Catalyst Health Disparities Research Program The Harvard Catalyst Health Disparities Research Program increases the prominence and impact of research on health disparities at Harvard. This opportunity seeks to engage a broad range of basic, clinical, public health, and other investigators from across the Harvard community, and will provide seed money for cutting-edge interdisciplinary translational research to enhance understanding of fundamental biological mechanisms involved in disease conditions that disproportionately affect health disparity populations and to develop therapies or interventions that can directly or demonstrably contribute to the reduction or elimination of health disparities. Inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional collaborations are encouraged. This RFA encourages applications from junior or mid-level investigators. For junior investigators, appropriate supervision and mentoring must be provided. The proposed project must be collaborative - single-investigator projects are not responsive to the RFA. At least one co-investigator is required and there is no limit to the number of co-investigators that may be listed. While researchers may submit only one application as principal investigator, they may be listed as a co-investigator on multiple applications. Amont: $75,000 for 1 year Deadline: May 14, 2015

Non-Federal Funding-Grants Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) Woman to Woman Grant Program OCRF provides support for scientific research that leads to more effective identification and treatment of ovarian cancer, and also supports related educational initiatives. Woman to Woman, which is based on an OCRF funded program at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, seeks to improve the quality of care for gynecologic cancer patients by strengthening coping capacities through a patient-to-patient support model. Woman to Woman is overseen by a trained, part-time Program Coordinator. The Program Coordinator is responsible for managing all aspects of the program, from mentor recruitment, training and supervision, to patient recruitment and fiscal and administrative oversight. The grant is intended to cover the cost of a part-time Program Coordinator's salary and to start the patient fund. It is expected that each Woman to Woman program will become self-funding after the first year. To ensure the success of the program, each Woman to Woman program must have the support of a physician champion in the gynecologic oncology department. Amount:$50,000 for 1 year Deadline: May 1, 2015

The project must be designed to accelerate therapeutic application to the clinic (i.e., lead to patient involvement within 2-3 years from the beginning of the grant). Each Team will consist of a Dream Team Leader, a Dream Team Co-leader, one of whom should be expert in translational research, no more than four additional Dream Team Principals, and at least two Advocates. At least one member, the Leader, Co-leader or a Principal, must be from an institution within the United Kingdom. Demonstration of outstanding mentorship and a future commitment to pediatric cancer investigation are critical components of a successful application. Institutional commitment to the career of the applicant is also expected. A minimum of 75% of the applicant's time during the 'A' Award period must be allocated as protected time for all research activities. This percentage of time includes both 'A' activities and the applicant's other research responsibilities. Applicants holding NIH K08, K99, R00, or R01 awards are not eligible to apply. Applicants MAY have research grants from other funding sources during the 'A' Award period, but there must be clear documentation of mechanisms to avoid scientific and budgetary overlap. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) Reach Awards Reach Grants are designed to move hypothesis-driven research toward the clinic. A successful application will identify an unmet clinical need relevant to the care of patients with pediatric cancer and describe how the work performed will allow for the translation of hypothesis-driven research to the clinic keeping broader clinical testing and implementation in view. The purpose of the Reach Grant is to advance ALSF's mission to find cures and better treatments for childhood cancers by providing support to move hypothesis-driven research into the clinic. Significant barriers exist that impede the translation of innovative and important ideas to the clinic. The Reach Grant seeks to remove one of these barriers by providing support for important pre-clinical projects that are necessary to move a study from the pre-clinical arena into a clinical trial. Thus, the goal of this award is to support selected "late translational" studies needed to ultimately initiate a clinical trial. Preference will be given to those research projects which, if funded, will likely result in the initiation of a clinical trial two to three years from the start of the project. Primary applicants may be Assistant, Associate or Professor level investigators who demonstrate a track record of discovery, investigation and external funding. Amount: $125,000/ year for 2 years Deadline: May 30, 2015
