Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH)-The Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (CFDD)-Brigham Research Institute (BRI)

Faculty Career Development Awards 

BWH seeks to increase the diversity in their faculty. The purpose of these awards is to provide transitional funding to enhance productivity and growth during the early critical years of an academic career. These awards are open to all junior faculty and are designed with emphasis on assisting women faculty, faculty who belong to a racial/ethnic population underrepresented in medicine and science, or faculty who have family responsibilities such as being the primary caregiver for children and/or parents.  

Amount: $34,500 for 1 year

Harvard Medical School (HMS)-Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) 

Eleanor and Miles Shore 50th Anniversary Fellowship Program for Scholars in Medicine 

The purpose of the Fellowship Program is to enhance the quality and diversity of the HMS faculty at all ranks, while supporting academic activities. While both men and women may apply, this support is an important part of the effort at HMS to increase the representation of women at the higher ranks in the Faculty of Medicine. Applicants must be at the appointment level of Instructor or Assistant Professor by January 1, 2015 and may not have been a past recipient of a Scholars in Medicine Fellowship.

Amount: $30,000 for 1 year

American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)-Kure It Cancer Research
The Kure It-AACR Research Grant for Immunotherapy in Kidney Cancer represents a joint effort to promote and support innovative cancer research. This grant is available to full time, independent junior and senior investigators to study immunological aspects of, or treatments for, kidney cancer. AACR membership is required. Nonmembers interested in this grant opportunity must submit a satisfactory application for AACR Active Membership by January 5, 2015. Applicants who currently hold an active AACR grant or a Kure It grant may not apply. Applicants may submit only one application for the Kure It-AACR Research Grant for Immunotherapy in Kidney Cancer but may concurrently apply for other AACR grants.
Amount: $125,000/ year for 2 years

American Heart Association (AHA)
AHA supports highly promising beginning scientists in their progress toward independence by encouraging and adequately funding research projects that can bridge the gap between completion of research training and readiness for successful competition as an independent investigator. Applications may be submitted for review in the final year of a postdoctoral research fellowship or in the initial years of the first faculty/staff appointment.
Amount: $77,000/ year for 3 years

Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF)

2015 Translational Research in Immunotherapy Award 

MMRF seeks proposals in the area of translational research that would provide a better understanding of immune therapeutic approaches for the treatment of myeloma. Applications for the MMRF 2015 Translational Research in Immunotherapy Award is open to all investigators with faculty appointments.  

Amount: $100,000/ year for 2 years

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS)-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc
Transforming CURES Initiative (TCI)
LLS aims to identify and develop novel, safe, and effective treatment paradigms for patients with hematological malagnancies. The near term goal of this program is to advance the scientific and medical understanding of myeloid disease progression from an early stage to frank malignancy. Applicants may only submit one application per RFP cycle in the TCI.
Amount: $400,000 over 3 years
Deadline: LOI; January 15, 2015

American Gastroenterological Association (AGE)
AGA supports new investigators to help establish their research careers or pilot projects that represent new research directions for established investigators. The intent of this award is to stimulate research in gastroenterology- or hepatology-related areas by providing time for investigators to obtain new data that can ultimately lead to subsequent grant applications for more substantial funding and duration. AGA membership is required at the time of application submission. Applicants may not submit the same research project for both the AGA Elsevier Pilot Research Award and the AGA-Elsevier Gut Microbiome Pilot Research Award.
Amount: $25,000 for 1 year

American Gastroenterological Association (AGE)
AGA supports young investigators, instructors, research associates or equivalents
conducting research relevant to the pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of digestive cancer. The award is intended to supplement existing career development funding. Applicants must hold an NIH K series (e.g. K01, K08, K23, K99, R00) or other federal or non-federal career development award of at least four years duration. There must be at least one year remaining on the award by July 1, 2015. Applicants may not hold an R01 or equivalent such as a VA Merit award. AGA membership is required at the time of application submission.
Amount: $40,000 for 1 year

Breast Cancer Research Foundation-American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)
Career Development Awards for Translational Breast Cancer Research
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation-AACR Career Development Awards for Translational Breast Cancer Research represent a joint effort to promote and support innovative research designed to accelerate the discovery, development, and application of new agents to treat breast cancer. At the start of the grant term on July 1, 2015, applicants must: hold a full-time faculty position with the title of assistant professor, instructor, research assistant professor, or an equivalent full-time faculty position. Applicants who currently hold an AACR grant may not apply. Applicants may submit only one application for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation-AACR Career Development Awards for Translational Breast Cancer Research but may concurrently apply for other AACR grants. AACR membership is required. Nonmembers interested in this grant opportunity must submit a satisfactory application for AACR active membership by January 20, 2015.
Amount: $138,000 over 2 years

American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE)
Endoscopic Research Awards
ASGE Endoscopic Research Awards are offered to investigators for projects in basic, translational and clinical research in endoscopy. Applicants are required to be an ASGE member at the time of application. If the applicant is a trainee, there must be a letter from the trainee's Division Chief confirming the trainee's ongoing appointment and position title at the institution for the duration of the grant.; if the trainee applicant is not guaranteed an appointment for the duration of the grant, a contingency plan is required

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)
Translational Research Grant
The 2015 Translational Research Grant is intended to continue the momentum on high priority pancreatic cancer
research that is poised for important translational next steps in orderr to help move discovery to application in patients. The scientific validation of the proposed modality must already exist and the project proposed for funding should represent a practical application of this knowledge. Fundamental discovery or basic science research projects are not eligible for funding through this grant mechanism. Importantly, to be eligible for funding, the scientific validation, clinical application and need, and feasibility of developing the clinical modality must already be established
and the supporting evidence must be submitted as part of the application process. Only one application for a Translational Research Grant will be accepted per Contact-PI, though it is possible to serve as a Co- PI on another proposed project.
Amount: $300,000 over 2 years

The National Pancreas Foundation (NPF)
Research Grant Application
NPF supports the funding of research related to pancreatic disease. The research conducted must be in the field of pancreatic diseases. Studies intended to advance knowledge in the areas of pancreatic carcinoma, and all forms of pancreatitis would be the closest to the areas of interest of the NPF.
Amount: $50,000 for 1 year

Association for Research of Childhood Cancer (AROCC)
Grant Application
AROCC provides funding for basic science and clinical projects related to the goal of advancing knowledge in pediatric and adolescent cancers. An investigator may submit only one application as principal investigator. The principal investigator must hold an independent faculty/staff research position.
Amount: $30,000 for 1 year
Deadline: February 1, 2014

American Thyroid Association (ATA)
Call for Research Grants Proposals
ATA is pleased to announce the availability of funds to support new investigator initiated research projects in the area of thyroid function and disease. Individuals must be new investigators that are less than six years from completion of their post-doctoral fellowship and have never been a Principal Investigator on an NIH R01
or equivalent grant (recipients of NIH R21 and K08 awards are eligible). Postdoctoral fellows are eligible
if their department provides written confirmation that at the time of the award the applicant will have a junior faculty position.
Amount: $25,000/ year for 2 years

Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA)
Research Grant
SFA has developed a program to provide grants to investigators interested in translational science sarcoma research. In accordance with the mission of the Foundation, research involving the development of novel agents against sarcoma, or research that could potentially lead to the development of novel agents against sarcoma, is eligible for this funding.
Amount: $50,000 for 1 year
Deadline: February 2, 2015


All applications are due in the Office of Grants and Contracts five business days prior to the sponsor's deadline for DFCI review and approval prior to submission to the sponsor. 
Non-Federal Funding - Fellowships

International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC)
Young Investigator Awards
Funding for IASLC fellowship and young investigator awards provides for training of fellows and young investigators who wish to pursue a career in diagnosis, treatment, laboratory research or other aspects of lung tumors. Fellowship support should be requested by a Principal Investigator who applies on behalf of a designated applicant. The Principal Investigator must be a member of the IASLC. A Principal Investigator can only apply for one applicant. Applicants must be within 3 years of initial faculty appointment of the time of application and within 3 years of completion of fellowship/post-doctoral training. Applicants must be a member of the IASLC.
Amount: $40,000 for 1 year

American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA)
Basic Research Fellowship
ABTA seeks applications from outstanding new and early career investigators. The intent of this program is to encourage talented scientists early in their careers to enter, or remain in, the field of brain tumor research.
Applicants should be on-track to pursue a career in brain tumor research with a sponsor who has a demonstrated history of brain tumor research and mentorship. Applicants can hold only one ABTA grant at a time.
Amount: $100,000 over 2 years

American Heart Association (AHA)
Mentored Clinical and Population Research Award
AHA encourages early career investigators who have appropriate and supportive mentoring relationships to engage in high quality introductory and pilot clinical studies that will guide future strategies for reducing cardiovascular disease and stroke while fostering new research in clinical and translational science, and encouraging community- and population-based activities. Individuals are not eligible to be the principal investigator if they hold or have held: certain NIH awards (such as R01, R21, P01),certain AHA awards (BGIA, SDG, EIA, GIA); or an award equivalent to any of the above (an independent investigator award).
Amount: $75,000/ year for 2 years

American Heart Association (AHA)
National Fellow-to-Faculty Transition Award
AHA provides funding for trainees with outstanding potential for careers as physician-scientists in cardiovascular or stroke research during the crucial period of career development that spans the completion of research training through the early years of the first faculty/staff position. Applicants may not have more than five years of postdoctoral research training (beyond clinical training). Applicants with J1 Visas are not eligible to apply. Award is split into two components: a training stage and a faculty stage.
Amount: $65,000 for training stage; $132,000/ year for up to 5 years for faculty stage

Jane Coffins Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research
Fellowship Application
The Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research is dedicated to providing financial support to offer highly qualified scientists the opportunity to pursue research into the causes and origins of cancer. Applicants in general should not have more than one year of postdoctoral experience. Only under exceptional circumstances will an award be made to an individual who will have had two years or more of postdoctoral research experience.
Amount: $157,800 over 3 years
Deadline: February 2, 2015
