Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC)-Koch Institute (KI)
Bridge Project
DF/HCC-KI Bridge Project is designed to help bring the expertise of these two Centers to bear on complex translational problems in cancer research. A particular emphasis is placed on fostering joint approaches  by engineers  and  cancer scientists, both basic and clinical/translational. Teams must be composed of at least one member of KI at MIT (or MIT faculty member) and one member of DF/HCC. Faculty members who have Bridge Funding are not eligible to apply, unless the amount of total funding is less than $187,500/ year. Please notify us by email before September 15, 2014 if you plan to submit a Bridge Project. 
Amount: $375,000/ year for 2 years

Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC)
K12 Paul Calabresi Award for Clinical Oncology (PCACO)
Clinical Research Career Development Program
The DF/HCC K-12 Fellowship Advisory Committee is currently seeking applicants for PCACO. Senior fellows and junior faculty, within five years of their first appointment, are eligible, provided they do not hold R01 or equivalent funding. The recipient must devote a minimum of 75% effort to the Clinical Research Career Development Program. All candidates must be U.S. citizens, naturalized citizens, or permanent residents. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible. Eligible appointees must be physicians in a cancer related specialty and must hold the HMS title of Instructor as of the time of appointment.
Amount: $100,000 over 5 years

Harvard Medical School (HMS) Foundation Funds (formerly Red Book)
Opportunities for Faculty and Fellows

Each year several foundations invite HMS faculty and postdocs to apply for their fellowships and grants, which serve as critical funding at the early stages of a research career. Interested investigators must first apply for the HMS nomination through the HMS Foundation Funds, and a committee will select the final candidates to submit applications to the foundations.  

Some of the funding opportunity sponsors have invited DFCI to submit separate from this process. You must go through DFCI and cannot submit through the HMS Foundation Funds process for a particular sponsor. Your first step should be to review the  DFCI Limited Application web page to be sure you are submitting through the proper mechanism.If you are still unsure please email contact Tami Simmons

The Medical Foundation
Charles H. Hood Foundation Child Health Research Awards Program
The Charles H. Hood Foundation supports newly independent faculty, provide the opportunity to demonstrate creativity, and assist in the transition to other sources of research funding. There are no limitations on departmental or institutional submissions. Applicants may submit only once to the Hood Foundation regardless of project focus unless specifically invited back by the Scientific Review Committee. Applicants are required to devote at least 20% effort to the proposed Hood research project. Applicants are ineligible if, at the time of application, they have combined federal and non-federal funding totaling $450,000 or more in direct costs at any time during the first year of the Hood Award  and are currently or have previously been designated as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on an R01, P01, or any other equivalents from federal agencies.
Amount: $150,000 over 2 years

Pancreatic Cancer Action network (PanCAN-American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)
Research Acceleration Network Grant
The goal of PanCAN-AACR grant is to provide funding and strategic assistance to a research project with the potential to double survival for pancreatic cancer by 2020. This project must be implemented by a multi-institutional team and include a clinical component. Contact PI must be a full-time investigator within the United States. Co-PI's can be from any institution worldwide. Any individual who currently holds an active AACR grant not affiliated with PanCAN may not apply. Only one LOI per contact PI will be accepted.
Amount: $1,000,000 over 1-3 years

American Cancer Society (ACS)
Pilot and Exploratory Projects in Palliative Care of Cancer Patients and their Families
ACS' Extramural Research and Training Grants Department identifies research addressing health equity and health disparities as a priority. This award supports investigators performing pilot and exploratory research studies that test interventions, develop research methodologies, and explore novel areas of research in palliative care of cancer patients and their families. Applications will be accepted via the Pilot and Exploratory Grants Mechanism.
Amount: $60,000/ year for 2 years

American Cancer Society (ACS)
Research Scholar Grant
ACS' Extramural Grants Program seeks to support innovative cancer research across a wide range of disciplines to meet critically important needs in the control of cancer. Applicants must be independent, self-directed researchers within 6 years of their first academic appointment. Although applicants may apply for multiple awards, an applicant may not be the principal investigator on more than one Research Scholar Grant at any time.
Amount: $165,000/ year for 4 years

American Cancer Society (ACS)
Institutional Research Grant Awards
Institutional Research Grants are awarded to institutions as block grants to provide seed money for newly independent investigators to initiate research projects.
Amount: $120,000/ year for 3 years

American Gastroenterological Association (AGA)
Research Scholar Awards
The overall objective of the Research Scholar Award is to enable young investigators, instructors, research associates or equivalents to develop independent and productive research careers in digestive diseases by ensuring that a major proportion of their time is protected for research. AGA Membership is required at the time of application submission. At the time of application submission, candidates may not hold or have held an NIH K01, K08, K23, K99, R00, R01, R21, Veterans Affairs Career Development Award or any award with similar objectives from non-federal sources.
Amount: $90,000/ year for 3 years

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)-American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)
Career Development Awards
PanCAN-AACR supports junior faculty who are within 11 years of their most recent degree. AACR membership is required. Non-members must submit a satisfactory application for AACR  active membership by the proposal due date. Any individual who currently holds an active AACR grant may not apply for an PanCAN_AACR career development award.
Amount: $100,000/ year for 2 years

Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA)-Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC),

Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer-MRA Pilot Award 

MRA and SITC will jointly support a Pilot Award for investigators who are past the initial 4 years of their first academic faculty appointment to conduct potentially transformative pilot studies in the area of immunotherapy. 

Amount: $50,000/ year for 2 years

Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA)

MRA Established Investigator Awards 

MRA is soliciting proposals that address the gap in translational science; turning scientific discoveries into tools and/or treatments for high risk individuals and melanoma patients.An investigator may serve as PI on only one proposal submitted to the MRA under any of the mechanisms in this cycle. This includes PIs on team science awards.   

Amount: $125,000/ year for 2-3 years

MRA Pilot Awards 

Pilot awards are designed to establish proof-of-concept for potentially transformative ideas from established investigators. Investigators who are past the initial 4 years of their first academic faculty appointment will be considered.

Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA)
MRA Young Investigator Awards
These awards aim to attract early career scientists with novel ideas into the field of melanoma. Investigators who have been awarded a prior MRA Young Investigator Award are not eligible to apply for an additional MRA Young Investigator Award. Investigators must be within 4 years of their first faculty appointment.
Amount: $75,000/ year for 3 years
Deadline: November 11, 2014


All applications are due into the Office of Grants and Contracts five business days prior to the sponsor's deadline for DFCI review and approval prior to submission to the sponsor.

Life Sciences Research Foundation (LSRF)

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships 

LSRF recognizes the discoveries and the application of innovations in biology by the highest quality young scientists. Applicants must be within 5 years from their most recent degree. A laboratory may have only one LSRF fellow at a time. Multiple applicants may apply from the same laboratory however, if multiple applicants from the same laboratory are selected as finalists only one fellowship may be awarded. You may apply if there is already an LSRF fellow in the proposed laboratory and the existing fellow is in their final year of funding. Individuals intending to remain in their thesis labs to complete their proposed LSRF postdoctoral research project are not eligible for an LSRF fellowship.

Amount: $60,000/ year for 3 years

Cancer Research Institute (CRI)

CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship  

CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship Program supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in cancer immunology. Applicants with 5 or more years of relevant postdoctoral experience are not eligible. There are no citizenship restrictions. Only one fellow per Sponsor/Mentor may apply per application round, and faculty sponsors may not have more than three CRI-supported fellows at any time.

Amount: $164,500 over 3 years

American Brain Foundation-American Academy of Neurology (AAN) 

Practice Training Research Fellowship 

The American Brain Foundation and AAN is pleased to announce a two-year fellowship to support training in clinical practice research. Fellows may not accept other fellowships, similar awards, or have another source of support for more than 50% of their research salary during the first year of an American Brain Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship  Applicant must be an AAN member interested in an academic career in clinical research who has completed residency or a post-doctoral fellowship within the past 5 years.  

Amount: $65,000/ year for 2 years

Deadline: October 1, 2014  

 

American Brain Foundation-American Academy of Neurology (AAN)
Clinical Research Training Fellowship 

Applicant must be an AAN member interested in an academic career in clinical research who has completed residency or a post-doctoral fellowship within the past 5 years. Those early in their clinical research careers will be given priority. Supplementation of the stipend with other grants or by the fellowship institution is permissible, but fellows may not accept other fellowships, similar awards, or have another source of support for more than 50% of their research salary during the first year of an American Brain Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship.  

Amount: $65,000/ year for 2 years

American Brain Foundation-American Academy of Neurology (AAN)-The Allergan Foundation 

Clinical Research Training Fellowship in the Neurological Application of Neurotoxins  

The American Brain Foundation and AAN is pleased to announce two two-year fellowships to support clinical research training on the neurological application of neurotoxins towards the treatment of neurological conditions and patient care. Applicant must be an AAN member interested in an academic career in clinical research who has completed residency or a post-doctoral fellowship within the past 5 years. Those early in their clinical research careers will be given priority. Fellows may not accept other fellowships, similar awards, or have another source of support for more than 50% of their research salary during the first year of an American Brain Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship.   

Amount: $65,000/ year for 2 years

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)-National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Frederick National Library for Cancer Research (FNLCR)
KRAS Fellowship
PanCAN is collaborating with NCI-FNLCR to fund research that has a structural-based approach to mutants that are relevant to pancreatic cancer. The NCI established the RAS program to target cancer cells that are driven by mutations in the family of genes. The direct focus of this project will be RAS mutation. Applicants may only submit one application for a KRAS fellowship.
Amount: $45,000 over 1 year

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)-American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)
Pathway to Leadership Grant
PanCAN-AACR Pathway to Leadership Grant represents a joint effort support early career investigators beginning in their postdoctoral research positions and continuing through their successful transition to Independence. Support is provided in 2 phases: mentored phase and independent phase. During the mentored phase the applicant just devote at least 75% effort to the project. Applicants who hold a K08 or any other application that conflicts with the 75% effort are not eligible. Any individual who holds an active AACR grant may not apply.
Amount: $600,000 over 5 years
Deadline: October 29, 2014
