The next DFCI Limited Application deadline will include St. Baldrick's Foundation funding programs. Please review their current programs and research priorities to prepare for their announcement in December which has a tight turn-around-time.
St. Baldricks funds lifesaving research that focuses on all major types of childhood cancers and funding is based solely on scientific merit, after a rigorous review process to determine the most promising research.

Internal Funding
Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) in Breast Cancer Developmental Project Awards (Pilot Projects) The purpose of this award is to advance high quality, novel early-phase research, foster new ideas in breast cancer research and to move research projects from a pilot stage to a level where external funding for more mature research is possible. The applicant must be in a position that is not time-limited. Post-doctoral fellows and visiting faculty are not eligible. The applicant must have Harvard (including the Broad Institute) faculty membership at the level of Instructor or higher. Projects may bridge SPOREs; DRP awards linked to another DRP award or SPORE project at Harvard or another institution are particularly encouraged. Amount: Up to $75,000/year for 2 years Deadline: December 4, 2013 SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) in Breast Cancer Career Development Award The purpose of this award is to develop the careers of young investigators committed to breast cancer. The applicant must have Harvard (including Broad Institute) faculty members at a level of Instructor or Assistant Professor. Clinical, population or lab-based researchers are all eligible. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) Young Investigator Award This award is designed for start-up funds for new scientists at the end of their fellowship training or early in their research career. Demonstration of outstanding mentorship and demonstration of a career plan that shows commitment to pediatric cancer investigation are critical components of a successful application. Amount: $50,000/per year for 2 years Deadline: December 16, 2016
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) Epidemiology Grant This award is expected to provide funds that will support investigators pursuing epidemiological research aimed at improving an understanding of childhood cancer. This grant mechanism is designed to support the research that focuses on 1) the epidemiology, early detection or prevention of childhood cancer or 2) comparative effectiveness and outcomes research related to detection, prevention and treatment Amount: $100,000/per year for 2 years Deadline: December 16, 2016
American Society of Hematology (ASH) Research Training Award for Fellows (RTAF)The ASH Research Training Award for Fellows (RTAF) is designed to encourage junior researchers in hematology, hematology/oncology, or other hematology-related training programs to pursue a career in academic hematology. The RTAF awards funding for training so fellows will have protected time for research (funds are to be used primarily for salary support for the applicant). Awards are targeted to two separate groups of researchers: a Junior Investigator RTAF for second and third-year fellows (apply in years one or two of fellowship) and a Senior Investigator RTAF for fourth or fifth-year fellows (apply in years three or four of fellowship). RTAF applicants are required to be members of ASH in good standing at the time of application, and for the duration of the RTAF program. If your 2014 dues have not been paid by 11:59 pm, Eastern, January 15, 2014, your application will be deemed ineligible. New membership applicants should be submitted no later than December 1, 2013 to be processed. Amount: $55,000 for 1 year Deadline: January 15, 2014
Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) Sarcoma Research Fund Program The SFA has developed a program to provide grants to investigators interested in translational science sarcoma research. The sponsor will only accept applications that focus on the following areas of research: omic characterization of sarcomas and definition of novel targets, omic patterns of sensitivity and resistance to existing agents, systemic therapy combinations, immunotherapy. Amount: $50,000 for 1 year Deadline: January 31, 2014
International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) IASLC Young Investigators Award The goal is to reward scientific excellence and to encourage innovative research in lung cancer prevention and translational medicine. Applications will be evaluated by a Scientific Review Panel for their merit, innovation and potential impact on the management of lung cancer.
Amount: $40,000 over 1 year Deadline: January 6, 2014
American Thyroid Association (ATA) ATA Research Grants The ATA is pleased to announce the availability of funds to support new investigator initiated research projects in the area of thyroid function and disease. Topics may include, but are not limited to: Thyroid Autoimmunity, Iodine Uptake and Metabolism, Thyroid Cancer, Medullary Thyroid Cancer, Clinical Disorders of Thyroid Function, Thyroid Hormone Action and Metabolism, Thyroid Imaging, Thyroid Nodules and Goiter, Thyroid Development and the Brain. Research awards are intended to assist new investigators in obtaining preliminary data for submission of a more substantial application (i.e., to the NIH). Recipients of ATA grants must be ATA members (submit application online if not already a member). For new members, membership dues for the first year will be waived. | Amount: $25,000/per year for 2 years Deadline: January 31, 2014
Association For Research of Childhood Cancer (AROCC) Research Grants The purpose of these awards is to provide funding for basic science and clinical projects related to the goal of advancing knowledge in pediatric and adolescent cancers. AROCC provides support for multiple, one-year "seed type" grants addressing basic science and/or clinical research in areas directly or indirectly related to research issues in pediatric or adolescent cancer research. Applications must include a statement of relevance to pediatric cancer. Amount: $30,000 for 1 year Deadline: February 1, 2014
National Kidney Foundation Young Investigator Grant Young Investigator Grants are primarily intended to support research who are commencing careers on the faculty of medical schools or research institutions. In all cases the applicant's research and career goals must be directed to the study of normal or abnormal kidney function or of diseases of the kidney and urinary tract. Only one\ investigator in an institution will be supported in any funding cycle by a Young Investigator Grant. Young Investigator Grants will be awarded to individuals no later than four years after initial appointment to a faculty (or equivalent) position or after appointment to a staff scientist (or equivalent) position in a research organization. Membership to the National Kidney Foundation is required.

The Medical Foundation The Charles A. King Trust Postdoctoral Research Fellowship This fellowship will support clinical or health services research scientists in the early to mid stages of their research careers and basic scientists in the later stages of their postdoctoral research training. The primary goal of the program is to prepare postdoctoral fellows for academic careers as successful independent investigators. Amount: Up to $51,000/per year for 2 years Deadline: December 16, 2013

Klingenstein Fellowship Awards in the Neurosciences
The purpose of this award is to support, in the early stages of their careers, young investigators engaged in basic or clinical research that may lead to a better understanding of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Several areas within the neurosciences are of particular interest to the Fund: Cellular and molecular neuroscience-studies of the mechanisms of neuronal excitability and development, and of the genetic basis of behavior, neural systems-studies of the integrative function of the nervous system, clinical research-studies designed to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and our understanding of the causes of neurological and psychiatric disorders.
Amount: $150,000 over 3 years

American Heart Association (AHA)
Postdoctoral Fellowship
The purpose of this fellowship is to help trainees initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research while obtaining significant research results under the supervision of a sponsor or mentor; supports individuals before they're ready for some stage of independent research. Proposals are encouraged from all basic disciplines as well as epidemiological, behavioral, community and clinical investigations that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems.
Amount: Up to $55,100/per year for 2 years
Deadline: January 15, 2014
