Ask the Expert:
Our child has recurring bouts with tonsillitis. At what point should we consider tonsillectomy?
Sore throat due to pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis, is a common complaint among children and adolescents. Viral agents are the most common infectious cause of pharyngitis in infants, toddlers and preschoolers. No specific medicine is required when a virus is responsible.
Among bacterial organisms causing acute pharyngitis/ tonsillitis, Streptococcus pyogenes is the most common, affecting mostly children and adolescents between 5-15 years.
Tonsillectomy is among the most commonly performed operation in children but there remains a wide variation as to who should be offered the surgery.
