2016 LA SPORTIVA VAIL MOUNTAIN TRAIL RUNNING SERIES CONTINUES JULY 24 WITH CAMP HALE HALF MARATHON, 10K & 5K
(Vail)-The Vail Recreation District's 2016 La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running Series, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, will continue the trail running race season on Sunday, July 24 with the Camp Hale Half Marathon, 10K and 5K in Camp Hale, just south of Red Cliff. The Camp Hale trail run, which is presented by Howard Head Sports Medicine, will begin with the half marathon at 8 a.m. followed by the 10K and 5K at 8:30 a.m.

Individual races cost $38 for week-of registration or $45 on race day. Preregistration is available online at www.vailrec.com or at www.active.com until 5 p.m. on Friday. Runners may also register or pick up their bibs from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Haute Route in Avon next to Pazzo's Pizza. Day-of registration will take place from 6:30 to 8 a.m. at the race start/finish area.

The half marathon course will utilize well-maintained dirt roads, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Colorado Trail surrounding beautiful and historic Camp Hale. This will be a rare opportunity to compete on the same terrain that the troops of the 10th Mountain Division used for training prior to World War II. The nearly 13-mile course is situated at 9,200 feet above sea level and will have minimal elevation gains reaching peak heights of 9,500 feet. The 10K and 5K races will begin 30 minutes after the half marathon. The  5K and 10K courses will be out and back utilizing the gravel roads in the Camp area. There will be aid stations for runners of both the 5K and 10K races.

Prizes for the half marathon will be presented to the top three finishers of each age group and to the top three finishers for amateur, open and masters divisions in the 5K and 10K races. Raffle prize drawings will also be held at the race awards ceremonies, featuring products from area merchants and national companies. Runners will receive a Green Layer tech T-shirt following each race, featuring unique designs.

The Camp Hale trail race is the fourth scoring race in the La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running Series, Colorado's premier trail running series, which is celebrating its 19th season. The seven-race series runs May through September and includes distances ranging from a 5K (3.1 miles) to a half marathon (13.1 miles). Following the Camp Hale Half Marathon, beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, the Berry Picker 5K trail run will take participants on an intense 3.1 mile climb from the base of Vail Mountain in Vail Village to Mid-Vail. Runners will then enjoy spectacular views and trail running during the 5K and 10K@10,000 Feet, which takes place at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 at the top of Vail Mountain, with the majority of the race above 10,000 feet in elevation. The final race of the season, the EverGold 5K and 11K is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18 and will feature single- and double-track trails on Vail Mountain showcasing Vail's stunning fall foliage. A full list and details are available at vailrec.com.
