VVMC QUICK TIPS

Is nutritional yeast the next best thing in sports nutrition?
Nutritional yeast is vegan protein, gluten free and packed full of B-vitamins and zinc

Katie Mazzia MS, RDN, CDE
Vail Valley Medical Center 970-479-5058

Nutritional yeast is used as a food, commonly found as light-golden flakes in a shaker bottle or can. Basically, the yeast is cultured and grown typically on molasses or beet cane. When it's grown, heated and dried, the leftover ingredients are nutrient-rich inactive yeast. Nutritional yeast is chock full of B vitamins, zinc, protein and fiber in a very small volume. It can boost your immune system from intense exercise exertion and is a great source of plant-based protein that's portable and easy to use. Other bonuses include: it's naturally sugar-free, dairy-free and gluten-free, and it contains no artificial colors or additives.

NUTRITIONAL YEAST | *per two tablespoons

Protein | 8-10g "complete" protein

Fiber
| 4-5g fiber

Carbohydrates
| 5-9g carbohydrates

High in B-Vitamins
| Breaks down carbohydrates for energy and assists proper nerve function

Zinc
| 20% DV can help immune system after a hard race or workout

Where to purchase
| Grocery (spice section), health food stores, natural grocery stores (bulk bins)

Tips and tricks
| Don't confuse nutritional yeast with regular or brewer's yeast. Nutritional yeast is NOT used as active yeast to make bread or baked goods rise; it's simply used for nutrition and flavor content.

How to use
| Sprinkle a moderate amount of nutritional yeast flakes onto popcorn to make your own cheese-flavored snack; use with salad dressings; top your pasta dishes; or mix with mac and cheese, potatoes, dip and vegetables, quinoa, rice or potatoes, roasted veggies or 1-2 teaspoon in a smoothie.
