VVMC QUICK TIPS
Electrolyte Drinks
By Madeleine Quinn, RDN and Katie Mazzia MS, RDN, CDE
Vail Valley Medical Center Dietitians
There are a lot of nutrition products on the market that are advertised to athletes, especially when it comes to hydration! When you work out for an extended period of time or it's hot and humid, the body loses water and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonates through sweat. It's important to replenish electrolytes because they maintain fluid balance, prevent cramping, relax muscles, and regulate muscle contraction and heart rhythm.
So which electrolyte drink is right for you?
- Sports drinks, such as Gatorade® have been a popular choice over the years to replenish what's lost during exercise. Most sports drinks contain carbohydrates + electrolytes (sodium and potassium) and are best for sports activities lasting more than an hour. This is because your body needs the carbohydrates to help fuel your muscles. Other choices include Skratch® and Tailwind® with no food coloring and in powder form so you can regulate the calories and amount you need.
- Electrolyte tabs, such as a brand called Nuun® contain just electrolytes; sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium bicarbonate. These tabs have different flavors, no sugars, and basically no carbohydrates. They are best used for activities lasting less than an hour if you want extra electrolytes during your sport or if your sweat has a lot of salt in it.

MEET YOUR MEDICAL SUPPORT The Steadman Clinic/Steadman Philippon Research Institute provides sports medicine coverage for the VRD mountain bike and trail running series. Athletic trainers are at each race and provide injury prevention, first aid, injury evaluation and referrals in case you get hurt. They are located at the start/finish line in The Steadman Clinic tent. Please feel free to use these services. Your athletic trainer for this week's race is: Hillary Magnuss
A southern California native, Hillery completed her bachelor's of science degree in Kinesiology at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA. It didn't take long for Hillery to catch the athletic training bug during her undergraduate education, and she soon accepted a position as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Oregon. She earned her MS degree in Exercise and Movement Science while helping care for the Oregon women's soccer and football teams and researching the standardization of concussion management protocols among division 1 athletic programs. Hillery spent 3 years as a staff athletic trainer and undergraduate athletic training education program instructor at Sacramento State University before moving home to be the athletic trainer for the women's soccer and women's water polo teams at the University of Southern California. After eight years with USC, Hillery is excited to transition to the orthopedic clinic setting. She is ready to take on the educational and personal challenges that she is certain to be presented with over the next year.
