VAIL REC DISTRICT OFFERS MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY PROGRAM

(Vail)-- Registration is underway for the Vail Recreation District's Middle School Cross Country program for youth runners, grades fifth through eighth. In its second year, students are invited to participate in the program and prep for high school Cross Country. The program will take place from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 17 through Oct. 3 at Homestake Peak and Berry Creek Middle Schools. There will also be three meets, Sept. 5 hosted by Battle Mountain High School, Sept. 19 hosted by Eagle Valley High School and Oct. 3 in EagleVail.

Students will learn from local high-level coaching staff including Josiah Middaugh, who ran Division I Cross Country and Track and Field at Central Michigan University and current coach of a variety of endurance athletes via Middaugh Coaching; Jared Biniecki, who also ran Division I Cross Country and Track and Field at Central Michigan University and current track and field coach for Homestake Peak School; and Nanci Almonte, a Division III Cross Country athlete for Colorado College and coach of 13 years within the Eagle County School District.

According to Biniecki, who also manages Dobson Ice Arena for the VRD, the goal is to teach kids how to run in a fun and competitive environment to help prepare them for Cross Country in high school. "Last year's program had 60 participants and it was received well by all," said Biniecki. "We're excited to bring back the Cross Country program for middle school students and hope our runners not only learn, but have an enjoyable experience that introduces them to a lifetime of running."

Cost is $65 per runner and participants will receive a racing singlet to keep and wear at meets. Practices will be outside and all runners should bring clothing according to the weather conditions. Proper running shoes are recommended.
