From Our Pastors
The Master's Touch

"And a leper came to Him, imploring Him, and kneeling said to Him, 'If you will, you can make me clean.' Moved with pity, He stretched out His hand and touched him and said to him, 'I will; be clean.' And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean." ~Mark 1:40-42~

I can't tell you how often I feel like this leper. Can you imagine the broken, unclean, unworthy hopelessness that the leper must have felt? He was an outcast, shunned by his friends, his community, and the world. He had to inform anybody that came near him that he was unclean and to stay away. No matter how hard he tried, he wouldn't be able to heal himself, and this would be his condition for the rest of his life. A permanently broken man...unworthy.

What is worthiness? What is "worth"? It is essentially value affirmed or bestowed upon us by others. It is something that we cannot bestow on ourselves, any more than the leper could make himself whole. In this day and age it is easy to fall into the trap of comparing our lives with that of this world. But, it is things of this world that have battered and bruised us. It is almost like looking through a cracked mirror; the real image doesn't come through. We look into the shattered mirror of society and see the broken, unworthy human standing before a world that is just as broken, yet we judge our worth by what we see, not the reality that comes with being in Christ. Friends, often we forget the worth, the value, bestowed on us by the grace of Christ.
Look at the grace that Christ showed the leper. The man was unclean, yet Christ made him clean. Because of Christ's touch, that man went from worthlessness to worthiness. This was not by anything he said or did, but all by the touch of the Master's hand.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come." ~2 Corinthians 5:17~

In 1921 Myra Brooks Welch wrote a famous poetic parable that reminds us of what the Lord does as He touches our broken lives:

'Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin, but he held it up with a smile.
"What am I bidden, good folks," he cried, "Who'll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar. Then two! Only two? Two dollars, and who'll make it three?"

"Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice; going for three..." But no,
From the room, far back, a grey haired man came forward and picked up the bow,
Then wiping the dust from the old violin, and tightening the loosened strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet, as a caroling angel sings.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer, with a voice that was quiet and low,
Said: "What am I bid for the old violin?" And he held it up with the bow.
"A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two? Two thousand! And who'll make it three?
Three thousand once; three thousand, twice, And going and gone," said he.

The people cheered, but some of them cried, "We do not quite understand.
What changed its worth?" Swift came the reply, "The touch of the Master's Hand."
And many a man with life out of tune, and battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd, much like the old violin.

A "mess of pottage," a glass of wine, a game - and he travels on.
He is "going" once, and "going" twice, he's "going" and almost "gone."
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd never can quite understand,
The worth of a soul and the change that is wrought by the touch of the Master's hand.
