From Our Pastors
Behold the Lamb of God

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" John 1:29

John the Baptist was the last of the Old Testament prophets and his life seemed the perfect fulfillment of the messenger who would be the Messiah's forerunner (Malachi 3:1). He appeared in the wilderness and preached and baptized in preparation for the sudden and unexpected appearance of the Christ. Although his odd manner of dress and fiery mode of preaching made him a spectacle, it was perfectly suited to his role of being the Lord's megaphone. When he publicly revealed who Jesus is he chose to call him the "Lamb of God."

When I close my eyes and imagine a lamb I always picture a cute, cuddly, furry little creature that is totally harmless and to my mind is the epitome of innocence. But those who were listening to John that day the image of the Lamb had a much deeper meaning. First of all the lamb was the symbol of King David who was Israel's great warrior and leader and from whose lineage the Messiah was expected. King David was not the picture of harmlessness. In fact, coming against him or his God proved, for the most part, extremely hazardous to one's health!

The lamb was also the symbol of the Passover meal where Israel was preserved from the plague of death in Egypt. In this plague, the angel of death would take the life of the firstborn son of all in Egypt. Israel could save themselves from this plague by spreading the blood of a lamb on the door posts and lintel of their house. Upon seeing the blood, the angel of death would "pass-over" that house for another. It is no mistake that the Father would shed the blood of His beloved Son, that by it, His own people would be delivered from death to eternal life.

Finally, there was the sacrificial lamb for the sins of the nation offered every day. Every day, all day, sacrificial lambs were being consumed on the altar in the temple of Jerusalem. The entire city would have smelled like a lamb barbecue (which, unless you are a vegan, smells pretty good) but this was a potent reminder that the wages of sin is death and that this penalty has been imposed on an innocent substitute.

This rich tapestry of meaning applies to all of Christ's person. He is our warrior king, He is our deliverer from death and He is our sacrifice for sin that brings God's favor to us. But rich symbolism aside, does this announcement not speak to our greatest need? We don't need our sins covered up. That's what we do with them. We conceal or deny them all the time. We look good to others but we still know the truth about what we have done and what lies within our hearts. The Lamb of God takes away our sin. It is removed, it is forgiven, it is remembered no more (Hebrews 8:12). The Lord Jesus is your champion who sacrificed His life that you might truly be free and forgiven. And that is really good news.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Chris
