From our Pastors...
Nipping it in the Bud

Settle matters quickly....Matthew 5:24

Last week I wrote of the pruning hand of God. Now I'd like to address the idea of the pruning we need to do ourselves.

When I was a young Senior Pastor, I'll never forget my Pastor and mentor say, "Bill, when troubles are brewing in the congregation, nip them in the bud or they will grow worse with time."

Just like God the Father prunes us in order to bear greater fruit for His honor, so we also need to trim back and prune problematic areas of our life so that they won't completely grow out of control. The branches of the vine can get mangy looking and become fruitless if they are not quickly contained and cut.

In the passage listed above, Jesus is specifically talking about relationships that have gone wild due to a lack of forgiveness and anger, if you don't settle matters quickly with your adversary your debt will be much greater.

Usually we know exactly what area in our life is growing out of control.  God doesn't play games with us concerning His will for our life. His Spirit is quick to convict and direct us in the areas that need change and can ultimately bring harm to us.

In what area of your life do you need to settle matters quickly so that they don't grow further out of control? Has there been something deep within that has been bothering you for a long time? Have you been putting off the inevitable? Does the Lord want you to start something or end something? Do you need to come clean with the Lord or anyone else and confess something? What dead wood needs to go? Do you need to nip anything thing in the bud so that it doesn't grow worse with time?

Once we make the decision to come in line with what we know God is requiring of us and lop off those areas that are impeding our progress in Christ, the sweet peaceful life from the vine will return in a refreshing way!
