Living the Lord's Prayer

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Matthew 6:13

"High resolve does not come to our rescue fast enough when temptation hits like a thunderbolt." Alan Redpath

The word that the English Bible translates as temptation is the Greek word "Peirasmos". This is a general word which refers to trials divinely permitted by God which try and prove our character. It can also be used to mean an enticement to disobedience through a believer's carelessness or satanic influence. In either case, the context of its use determines its meaning.

The New Testament clearly teaches that the temptation to do evil is never at the enticement of God. God is neither tempted by evil (which is the very antithesis of His character) nor does He tempt with evil (see James 1:13-15). Someone else has wisely pointed out that temptations always show up with flowers and perfume because if you could smell the stench of bondage contained within, you would never succumb to it.
Of temptations of the other sort, sometimes God does allow Satan to bring us a trial which will purify us in the end. This is best illustrated by the story of Job in the Old Testament. In the Gospels, Jesus told Peter that Satan has demanded the right to sift him like wheat.   In both cases, these men found their faith, integrity and motivations were sorely tested. I find it strangely encouraging that both these godly men floundered and failed through their trials because I don't do them so well myself. In the final analysis, both men were restored by the Lord but greatly humbled in the process. As unwelcome as it is, failure is often a more effective teacher than success.
Temptations of this variety happen to all Christians and they shouldn't be unwelcome if we desire to grow strong in the Lord. We only grow strong through testing and being exercised.

As this touches on prayer: Pray that sin would no longer be enticing and that we would have the wisdom to resist the devil until he flees. Better to bear the weight of temptation than the bruising of sin.

For most of us there are some things we know are so enticing they really pose no hazard because we won't intentionally go anywhere near them. However, there is another kind of temptation which is for us a hidden reef. It shipwrecks us because we are unaware of it. In this we would pray for deliverance from the temptation that would catch us by surprise.

As for the temptation of a trial, we would pray not to be spared from all trials, but that we would be spared from anything that would cause us to fall and destroy our faith.
Once again, like the prayer for bread and forgiveness, this is a daily prayer. Today's spiritual battle was won, but the war is never over until this life is completed. We need daily strength for a daily battle.
See you Sunday,
Pastor Chris
