From our Pastors...
Living the Lord's Prayer
Part 5 of a 6 part series

...and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors...
Matthew 6:12

When Jesus taught the "Principle of 70x7" (Mt.18:21-33) he did not mean 490 strikes and you're out! Jesus meant that as a son of God, the generosity of your forgiveness should be as expansive as God's forgiveness is for you. Even as we enjoy release from our sins when we ask forgiveness, we are to release those who sin against us as well. We are to cancel the debt even as our debt was cancelled through Christ's atonement.

It wasn't as if God wrote off a bad debt. It was paid in full by Him through the shed blood of His only begotten Son on the Cross. It's freely given at no cost to us, but it cost the Lord dearly. For us to forgive, especially if we have been grievously injured by another, is going to be costly. Forgiveness always costs the person who gives it.

Unwillingness to extend forgiveness does invite the discipline of the Lord upon our lives. I might hasten to add that as your body metabolizes your anger it can cause a host of health problems too. Take it from someone who knows. However, the foolproof way to never go near the point of un-forgiveness is to remember how much you have been forgiven. We forget all too quickly how many things God's grace has covered in our own lives.

Relationally, if we know we have sinned against a brother, or if we did so unintentionally or inadvertently and are called up short, we should readily admit it.   Our old nature's approach is to hide, deny, or deflect our wrongdoings when they are exposed. As someone who is transformed by the Gospel, we have no vested interest in pretending we're perfect. If the Lord or brother calls you up short, admit it and ask forgiveness.

We must also remember as Christians that we also pick up debts before God on a daily basis. Just as we ask for daily bread, we ask for daily forgiveness from the Lord. Some days we may not feel like we have sinned, other days we are painfully aware of our sin. We sense our failure and we know we have grieved the Holy Spirit.

Reverence for the holiness of God would constrain us to realize that we sin daily whether we realize it or not. In both situations, the disciple seeks and finds the Lord's forgiveness knowing the Lord's mercies are new every morning.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Chris
