From our Pastors...
Wonderment

The fading sunlight danced away with the colorful fall leaves leaving a cool, crisp autumn evening in its wake. The fresh mountain air, the sweet smell of the pines, and the noise of the crickets brought a boy of eight to the creek's edge. Armed with his flashlight, pillow and sleeping bag, he found his spot up against a stump of a nearby tree to watch the night slowly tick by. He wanted to show his family how brave he was by staying out under the stars, but it was pretty dark beyond the light of the campfire.

The rest of the family retired to their tents and his flashlight beam swept up and down Union Creek as the stars shone brightly above. His faithful, canine companion snuggled close as the young boy, full of awe and wonder, watched and waited and waited and waited.

His flashlight battery died, but that was ok; the fire was still glowing, and he could easily still hear the babble of the creek. In fact, he could see the stars reflecting off of its surface as the water flowed past the campsite. It had to happen soon, he was getting so tired...

The early morning dew and cold woke the boy. As he rubbed sleep from his eyes and pulled dog hair from his mouth, the sight and sound of Union Creek flowing dismayed him. He must have missed it! Maybe tonight he would witness the great phenomenon of the water in Union Creek stop flowing and go to "sleeping" and stopping its never ending flow.

"Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and His understanding no one can fathom." Isaiah 40:28

Little did I know that the lessons learned on that camping trip would still have an impression on me almost 30 years later. I learned:
  • Don't sleep on a dog if you sleep with your mouth open.
  • Union Creek does not actually "sleep."
  • I am a little being in a BIG world.
  • God is much bigger, yet more relational, than I can ever understand.

I can hardly pass a creek without remembering that evening and it is easy to pigeonhole the concept of a creek going to sleep as rambling thoughts of a kid. But now that I am older, do I still wonder how big God really is? He created this entire universe but He is still intimate enough to teach a young boy on the bank of a creek life lessons. That is an amazing God! No matter what is going on, He will never grow tired or weary, things can't overwhelm Him. Yes, things happen that I scratch my head at or wrestle with God over, but am I still willing to trust that He is big enough and that He has everything under control? When was the last time you wondered how BIG the Lord is?

Step-parenting without getting stepped on.
Getting on the same page or even in the same book, as a couple.
Yours, Mine, and Theirs- working with the other biological parent.
Who is priority, your spouse, child or both?
Rules, relationship, and respect!

The Blended Family Workshop will be held Saturday, November 14, 9:00 a.m.-noon in the Fireside Room. Childcare and refreshments provided. To register: pick up a Registration form/flyer and sign up at the Information Counter using an Event Envelope and indicate child care needs (red sticker). Cost is $25.00 per couple.
