part 2 of a 2 part series

A fool shows his annoyance at once. Proverbs 12:16

When my daughter was about 12 she complained to me after church service that a boy in her Sunday school class was teasing her. She told me that she couldn't take it anymore, so she started crying, then she spontaneously ran out of class. That evening their mother asked if we could have a family devotion. So we all sat down together (their mom, my daughter 12 and my son 10) and amazingly I opened to Proverbs 12:16 "A fool shows his annoyance at once."

I decided to seize the moment as her Father and give her another life lesson. I explained to her that what happened that morning in class was a perfect example of what this verse was saying.

As I was explaining the need for patience and self-control under provocation our kids started poking one another and not paying attention. I asked them to stop and listen and they continued to giggle and not focus. I instantly stood up without hesitation and firmly announced to the family that "THIS FAMILY DEVOTION IS OVER"! I then briskly walked outside and slammed the door. It didn't take very long for me to realize that I just violated the very verse I was trying to teach our kids. I remember being on the other side of my front door thinking, what am I doing outside?

I took a deep breath to calm down and went in to talk to their speechless mother. I'll never forget that when I walked into our room she commented on how ironic it was that the Bible verse happened to be that one!

I then walked sheepishly into my kids' room to apologize and told them that the reason I did that was to teach them what the verse meant. They laughed and said, "Yeah right Dad!"

One of the ways we know that the fruit of patience is growing in us is determined by how quickly we react to situations that annoy us. Have you noticed that mature, patient believers don't pull the verbal trigger quickly? Actions and discussions are more thoughtfully calculated rather than knee-jerk responses.

In the past I was an associate Pastor to my mentor and Senior Pastor for 17 years. Many times through the years I was ruffled and frustrated by whomsoever and felt that action needed to be taken to confront the person or remedy the situation. After a while I could predict what my Pastor would say: "Let's pray and sit on this one over the weekend or for a few days and see what the Lord has for us". Invariably when we came back to the table we had a different perspective and I personally was relieved that I didn't do what I thought I should have done days earlier.

The complete verse reads "a fool shows his annoyance at once....but a wise person stays calm when insulted." Proverb 12:16 (NLT)

Personally I don't know if it's because I was raised in San Francisco, I am Irish or I learned impatient reactions from a former family member. Whatever the case, my flesh has been quick to respond to annoyances my whole life. But now the Lord wants to help me reign in those unattractive reactions and learn to think, pray and ponder my responses. He wants the patience of Jesus to rule my heart and determine how I should respond to life's annoyances. What about you?

Patiently waiting,

Pastor Bill
