The Unseen Audience

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  Hebrews 4:12

The year is 1854 and in London, England a huge exhibition hall made entirely of glass is about to have its grand opening. Speaking at the opening ceremony was the famous evangelical preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon. A few days before Spurgeon went to test the acoustic properties of the great building. He sent one of his deacons to the farthest recess of the gallery. They thought they were the only persons in the building. Then slowly and distinctly Spurgeon repeated the following scripture:
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1 Timothy 1:15.His deacon gave the signal that he heard it and both men left the hall quickly for their other duties and appointments.

Twenty years later, Mr. Spurgeon received a call to visit a dying man. He hastened to the man's address with the idea in mind that some poor soul was seeking salvation. But when he got there he was surprised to find a radiant Christian, happy and rejoicing in the Lord. He told the great preacher that he did not want to die without telling him how he had been converted. "Twenty years ago," he said, "I was up in the cupola of the Crystal Palace, finishing a little glazing. Everything else had been completed, and all the other workmen had gone. Suddenly I heard a voice saying, 'This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.' "I dropped my tools and looked up to heaven, and answered, Yes, 'Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief.' (Mark 9:24). Certainly it was the voice of God. No other word was spoken. It was then and there that I gave my life to Him."

What a wonderful reminder about the power of the Word of God on the human soul. Few of us will ever have the great public ministry that Charles Spurgeon had, but we need to remember people do listen to our conversations at the coffee shop, work, and at home. What we say can have a great impact which is why it is important that our speech be seasoned with the scriptures. The one who overhears may be the person who needs it the most!

Grace and blessing to you today!

Pastor Chris
