From our Pastors...

On Self Promotion and Humility

But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are at the table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.  Luke 14:10-11

We live in a society where self-promotion is the name of the game. No one expects to hear about someone who concealed their success and actively promoted their shortcomings. Could you imagine one of our Presidential candidates talking truthfully about all the mistakes and poor decisions they made in the last office they held? The day that happens best to stay indoors because of all the pigs that will be flying around (never a good idea to be under a flying pig!)

Jesus advises His disciples to take the opposite approach to life. Instead of self-promotion, we are told to under-promote ourselves. Many people have the notion that humility means thinking poorly of yourself, but nothing is further from the truth. Such thinking is mistaking humility for humiliation or sniveling. It is actually quite okay to recognize you have strengths and abilities as long as it is accompanied by a realistic assessment of your weaknesses too.

In Luke 14 Jesus speaks about a wedding banquet with a formal seating arrangement. Just as happens today, the most honored guests sit in closest proximity to the bride and groom, while the rest of the invitees sit further away. As this touches on how we live our Christian lives, Jesus is saying don't assume you are always the guest of honor. This was the habit of the Pharisees who had a very high estimate of their standing and closeness to God. Far better to take the seat of an invitee and be asked up to the head table than the other way around.

As a follower of Christ, if we proceed with a humble view of our standing before God the least that can happen is we'll find ourselves being exalted in the end.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Chris

Host Families Needed

Foreign exchange students coming to the U.S. for the 2015-16 school year need host families. Will you host a student? One is Changtian, who is a 15 year old boy from China. He enjoys debate, chess, science, swimming, and piano. Exchange students speak English, have medical insurance, and pay their personal expenses. Host families provide room and board and loving parental guidance. Students become a part of the family while attending the local high school.

Host families are needed in the Crater, Phoenix, North Medford, South Medford, Grants Pass High, Rogue River Jr./Sr. High School, North Valley, Hidden Valley, and Eagle Point High School districts. Please contact me if interested or in need of more information. The sooner you choose a student, the sooner you can start to get to know them. An exchange student will thank you for opening their home to them.

In Closing...

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name; you are Mine!
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and through the rivers,
they will not overflow you.

When you walk through the fire,
you will not be scorched,

Nor will the flame burn you.
