Tasking My Inner Child

I was feeling pretty whiny this morning. We stayed up too late Saturday night watching a great old movie and woke up this morning to the windblown, soggy darkness for an early morning prayer gathering prior to regular Sunday service...sigh. It never seems to fail that on such unfortunate convergent points of fatigue and extra effort, my "whiny gene" really kicks in with a vengeance. I toyed for a moment with the idea of dramatizing my mild sinus headache in order to justify playing "hooky" and skip Sunday service altogether....sigh.

Those are the moments when I'm truly thankful for the Spirit's work in my life; that sense of conviction He awakens in my heart to the obligations of serving His righteousness instead of my carnal appetites. The knowledge that I will be blessed that day by the pleasure of greeting old friends, the growth that will come from hearing the Word, the filling that follows the offering of prayer and counsel to those in need, not to mention the delight my spirit bathes in when our worship rises to the Lord...that knowledge isn't enough to motivate me in the first half hour of the day.

I rise, in the faith it will get better, to feed the cats, brush my teeth, make the coffee and stumble around looking for the morning paper. I do this with a half-smile knowing that my Maker takes pleasure in my trust of His admonition "not to forsake the assembly of the saints" (Heb 10:25). I know He will bless my obedience and by mid-day I will be grateful that I honored His call to come. But I am even more pleased that He is pleased. Some days I feel I please Him so little that my heart is grieved, and I am grateful for the simplicity of the few things He has actually given me to complete.

Do not grow weary in doing good my friend. Although our Father has already accomplished everything that must be done, He still uses our humble efforts and childlike willingness, to bring about the fullness of His will and to glorify His name. When we comfort and encourage each other, when we grant love and forgiveness to those who offend, when we respond with grace and faithful patience to the hurts and injustice of the day, when we ignore our whiny "inner child" to do what is right...then we honor Him who rescued our souls. In the name of Jesus, dear believer, keep on keepin' on.

His peace upon you,

Pastor Matt

Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.
