AMSOV 2015 Conference

message from amsov president

Dear AMSOV Members,

We hope your seasons and projects are going well.

In the current League of American Orchestras' "Quick Orchestra Fact Sheet," it states that 41% of the total revenue collected by all symphony orchestras comes from private sources, while 31% comes from concert revenue.  This highlights the importance of fund raising for most orchestras and, because many of our volunteer organizations play a significant part in fund raising, we are emphasizing fund raising in this issue.

Thank you for all you do to support your local orchestras.  If you have any comments or suggestions for the newsletter, please send them to newsletter@amsov.org.

-Mike Minor, President

AMSOV 2015 Conference - Philadelphia, PA
March 5 - 8, 2015

Exciting plans are underway for our conference next year. We hope that you are making plans to attend. Some things that you can do now are:

  1. Speak to your orchestra to see if they can add some money to their budget to fund volunteer attendance at the conference.

  2. Speak to other volunteers who may want to attend. You might find a roommate.

  3. Let us know if there are any subjects or issues that you would like to address and we will try our best to include them. You can email me at sally.bullard@mac.com or Sally.Bullard@amsov.org

Please check our website for our speakers - as new speakers are confirmed we will add them to the speakers' page on the website. The full agenda should be available by mid-late summer.

Right now we are working on a trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show, spending Sunday morning at the Curtis Institute of Music with a tour and a panel discussion of topics related to music education, visits to two, unique clubs in Philadelphia - the Union League (voted the best club in the nation) and the Acorn Club, a woman's club that was founded in 1889 and is still going strong.

The concert should be fabulous - of course, it is The Philadelphia Orchestra (OK, I am prejudiced).  Emanuel Ax will be playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. Also on the program are Haydn's Symphony No. 92 and Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 4. Please go to philorch.org for more information.

Look for our registration material which should be online by September and we hope to see you in March!

Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliates

Annual Fundraising Workshop - January 29, 2014

Each year for the past three seasons, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Affiliates have teamed with the LA Phil's Development Department to present a "Fundraising Workshop" for the benefit of the LA Philharmonic's Affiliate volunteer groups. This year's Workshop was chaired by Affiliate Past Chair Aida Gaona, and was held on January 29, 2014 at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles. The Workshop was open to all members of the LA Phil's 16 volunteer support groups.

This year's Fundraising Workshop featured two Power Point presentations given by representatives of the LA Philharmonic's Development Department, followed by five peer roundtable sessions led by individual Affiliate Committees.

Evie DiCiaccio, LA Phil's Director of Development, explained that "Fundraising is Like Dating," and involves: 1) Building a relationship of trust; 2) Treating people with respect and consideration; 3) Sharing core values; and 4) Experiencing the joy of giving. Ms. DiCiaccio also outlined the five essential steps of the fundraising process:  1) Identify your prospect;  2) Qualify the prospect;  3) Cultivate a relationship with the prospect;  4) Solicit the gift;  and 5) Continue to steward the relationship with the donor.

Susan Reardon, LA Phil's Director of Gift Planning, defined "Legacy Giving," and explained the importance of planned gifts and bequests to the overall financial health of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. She spoke about the types of legacy gifts and the process involved in setting them up.   Ms. Reardon announced a new program whereby each of the 16 Affiliate Committees will have one of its members designated as a "Legacy Gift Liaison."

The presentations were followed by five 20 minute "roundtable" discussions on the following topics:

  • Getting the Local Community Involved

  • In-Kind Donations and Underwriting

  • Running Successful Silent Auctions

  • Supplemental Fundraising Activities, such as Raffle, "Fill-a-Need," etc.

  • Discussions of Individual Committee Events: What worked, and what didn't

The Fundraising Workshop was followed by lunch sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

After the roundtable discussions, the Development Department "mentors" (assigned to each Affiliate committee) were introduced, and fundraising goals were discussed.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Introduces
38 Debutantes at the 28th Annual Presentation Ball
Ball Chair Dixey Arterburn, and Debutante Daughters Libby and Hailey

DSOL President Ginger Sager with husband Rod

Gowns and curtsies were all the rage as 38 Symphony Debutantes took their bows at the 28th Annual Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Presentation Ball on February 8 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The spotlight was on the debs, their families and dapper members of the Honor Guard.

The 2014 Debutantes were introduced to an audience consisting of families of the Debs which included parents, grandparents, members of the Presentation Ball Honor Guard and the Dallas Symphony Assembly, which includes past Debs.

The Debutante season started with an announcement party in May and ended with the Ball on Feb 8. It is a whirlwind season of numerous parties and events and rehearsals for the famous Texas Dip.

Dixey Arterburn served as Ball Chair and Ginger Sager is President of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League.

Honorary Chairs Gene and Jerry Jones

The Honorary Chairs of the event were Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his wife Gene, who had two granddaughters making their debut this year: Haley Anderson is the daughter of Shy and Charlotte Anderson and Jordan Jones is daughter of Karen and Stephen Jones.

"It is so gratifying to see everything coming together and all the work of the chairs and volunteers has fallen into place so beautifully," said Ball Chair Dixey Arterburn. "I had a deb daughter (Libby Arterburn) this year as well as being ball chair, so it was exciting to be part of the planning, organization and execution of this memorable evening for the debs, the honor guard, and their families. Truly a night they will always cherish."

The Presentation is the largest fundraiser for the DSOL. More than $9 million has been raised for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra through the annual event.

Kansas City Symphony

The Kansas City Symphony Alliance (KCSA) opened its 45th Symphony Designers' Showhouse on April 26.  We believe that this is the longest continuously running designers' showhouse benefit in the country.  The house has been redesigned by 19 different designers and will be open for public touring through May 18.  Ann Hager of KCSA is chairman of the Showhouse committee this year.  We hope to raise over $100,000 for the Symphony at this event. The showhouse web site is http://www.showhouse.org

KCSA is also planning a new fund raising event for next fall, which will be a combined dinner/concert featuring young musicians who have been finalists in the Symphony Young Artists Competition over the past couple of years.  The evening will feature performances intermingled with courses of the dinner.  Some of the performances, we believe, will feature young artists playing duets with their teachers, who are members of the Kansas City Symphony.  The event is being called "Symphony Rising Stars" and we hope to attract 200 attendees at a price of $75 apiece.  If successful, this event will probably become an annual fund raising event.  KCSA member Sylvia Brush is the chair of this event, and it was the brainchild of Dick Klein, our President-Elect.

KCSA is also staffing food concessions for the Kansas City Symphony's annual public Memorial Day weekend performance in front of Kansas City's historic Union Station.  This event is called Celebration at the Station.  In past years, the volunteers have raised over $2,000 for KCSA for basically one afternoon and evening's worth of work.  This year it is on Sunday, May 25. Public television station, KCPT 19 and other public television stations throughout the region will broadcast the event live and are scheduled to rebroadcast the event several times during Memorial Day weekend and over the Fourth of July weekend. Check local listings for broadcast dates and times.

Minnesota Orchestra

Friends of the Minnesota Orchestra is thrilled to be back in full swing with our membership and education programs. We are recovering nicely from our place of patience during the negotiations with a gain in members. Our membership numbers have more than doubled since the Minnesota Orchestra returned to Orchestra Hall in February. Osmo Vänskä will also be returning as Music Director for two years.

Sunday, April 27, we held our Spring Membership Brunch, celebrated our sponsorship of four days of Friends & Family Concerts with the Minnesota Orchestra and introduced our board for 2014-15. They will step into their positions on the first of September. Anne Miller, WAMSO Past President, 1988-1990, shared memories of our founder, Rosalynd C. Pflaum, who passed away the second of April. David Brubaker, violinist with the Minnesota Orchestra also played a meditative selection for the group.

Rosalynd C. Pflaum with Isaac Stern

Rosalynd C. Pflaum founded WAMSO, now Friends of the Minnesota Orchestra, in January of 1949. She was proud to build the organization in the face of male skepticism that such a support organization could be beneficial to the (now) Minnesota Orchestra. She was a very private person and privately funded the first prize awarded to the winner of our Young Artist Competition, since its inception and her assistance in organizing it. In her will she has provided for the creation of an endowment to permanently fund that prize. Her vision and dedication laid a solid foundation for Friends of the Minnesota Orchestra.

Friends of the Minnesota Orchestra is known for its volunteer opportunities, as well as, music education programs and its 65 years of supporting the Minnesota Orchestra. We create opportunities that bring the power of music to friends, families and adults.

Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal

On May 28 the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal will be inaugurating its new organ with a Bach, Liszt and Saint-Saëns program. Our beautiful hall, La Maison symphonique, opened in August 2011 but Montréalers have been waiting for this second opening until now. The volunteers, as always, will be contributing to the event in various ways, but we also decided to have a mini fundraising program even though we had agreed to suspend all fundraising activities for this season. The volunteers will be offering score sheets of Saint-Saëns signed by Kent Nagano, our conductor, and by Olivier Latry, organist emeritus from Notre-Dame- de-Paris. We also have two different magnets with photos of the hall and organ. The selling of scores is a remake of what was a success in 2011. This permitted our Association to invite more than 400 school children to youth concerts.
