National People's Congress Ends

The People's Congress ended this week, officially ending the recent power transition. Widely believed to be a rubber-stamp conference, highlights included the abolishment of the Railway Ministry and pledges to clean up corruption.

Home Prices Rise Again

66 out of 70 cities reported a price hike in home prices by an average of 2.1%. The IMF estimates that real estate contributes to 12% of China's GDP.

Taiwan President Attends Papal Inauguration

    Taiwanese president Ma Yingjiu attended Pope Francis' inauguration, despite warnings from Beijing. The officially atheist government of Mainland China manages religious affairs in China and does not recognize Rome's authority over Chinese Catholics.

Doctor Makes Case in Taiwan for Banning Organ Tourism

   Since 2008, Israeli law has prohibited organ transplantation candidates from buying specimens from countries such as China, largely because of mounting evidence of organ "harvesting" from living Falun Gong practitioners there. An Israeli doctor is pushing for the Taiwanese government to enact similar legislation.

Dumped Pig Carcass Effect Water Quality but Under Control: Authorities

    At least 9000 diseased pigs have been pulled from the Huangpu River, which flows through Shanghai. A pig farm upstream is believed to have dumped the carcasses, shedding light on the government's attempts to reform the pig market.
