Wen Jiabao Gives Last Address to People's Congress

   The rubber-stamp National People's Congress opened last week, a meeting that will make Chinese leadership transitions complete. Outgoing Premier Wen Jiabao warned of pollution, spoke about goals for the economy and announced further increases in People's Liberation Army spending.

   Angered when a local party chief leased their land to a business friend, residents stood their ground against a blockade of "ruffians," hired and armed by the local government. The standoff has ended and the chief has been replaced, but residents are still pressing for democratic elections.
