US regulators recently approved what will be China's largest foreign takeover, a $15 billion purchase of Canadian-based oil giant Nexen. China state-owned CNOOC needed the approval as Nexen has operation in the US.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences said on Saturday that the recent smog that choked Beijing for the several weeks contained large amounts of toxic organic chemicals. Known as photochemicals, similar compounds killed more than 800 people in Los Angeles a hundred years ago.
