 Following a damning US Congressional report last week on the Chinese telecom giants, Huawei and ZTE, the Canadian government may also have bad news for the companies with close ties to the Chinese Communist Party. A spokesman for Canadian President Steven Harper stated that they might invoke a national security exception allowing them to block the companies.

Chinese banks issued fewer new loans in September than anticipated, despite the Chinese central bank cutting interest rates. Continued signs of economic slowdown are particularly worrisome for the government as it heads into its 18th Party Congress this month.

 Forced evictions in China have risen significantly in the last two years, Amnesty International stated last week. Land claims by the government are the single largest reason for the unprecedented, and growing, number of annual protests, which some have estimated to be in the tens of thousands. "Potentially, millions of people in the country are at risk," said AI.

The Nobel Prize for Literature went to Chinese author Mo Yan last week. While State-run media have lauded the award, other Chinese have criticized the award on account of Mo Yan's toeing the line of the Chinese Communist Party's propaganda department. "Morally and politically, I think this will have devastating consequences," blogged one prominent journalist.

Bo Xilai, the disgraced CCP leader, will possibly be punished by suspended death sentence. State-run Xinhua News Agency went on to name the probe into disgraced Chongqing Party secretary Bo Xilai as a "major case".
