1. AASV Board addresses antibiotic-free production
By Harry Snelson, American Association of Swine Veterinarians
PorkNetwork.com
April 28, 2016

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians' (AASV) Board of Directors addressed the issue of antibiotic-free production during their spring board meeting on Mar. 21, 2016. Veterinary members of the association's Pig Welfare and Pharmaceutical Issues committees raised concerns regarding pig health and well-being in antibiotic-free production systems. The committees considered issues associated with concerns that animals requiring antibiotics may not receive timely treatment under certain antibiotic-free production strategies.

The timely treatment of sick animals is a standard of veterinary medicine and proper animal husbandry. Some antibiotic-free systems, however, incentivize the lack of antibiotic use and do not provide an alternative marketing strategy for those animals that need antibiotic treatment. This disincentive may lead to delayed treatment or the failure to treat altogether. AASV members consider this to be unacceptable from the standpoint of proper animal health and well-being.

Brian Broom
The Clarion-Ledger
April 28, 2016

Three men, including two from Mississippi, have been accused of importing white-tailed deer into Mississippi in a federal indictment that was unsealed this week.

According to US Attorney Gregory K. Davis of the Southern District of Mississippi, Coleman Virgil Slade, 70, of Purvis, Don Durrett, 72, of Aspermont, Texas, and Dewayne Slade, 44, of Purvis, have been charged with various violations of the federal Lacey Act.

Durrett and Dewayne Slade appeared for arraignment on Tuesday and pled not guilty to the seven-count federal indictment. Coleman Virgil Slade is expected to be arraigned at a later date. According to the indictment, from January of 2009 through December of 2012, the Slades and Durrett conspired to purchase and transport in interstate commerce live white-tailed deer from Texas to Mississippi in violation of both state and federal laws. If convicted, each faces up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.

The indictment states Dewayne Slade owns a high-fence enclosure of approximately 420 acres in Lamar County. It also states that Durrett owns and operates a 9,000-acre enclosed ranch in Stonewall County, Texas. According to the indictment, deer were moved from Durrett's ranch to Dewayne Slade's enclosure, "...for the purpose of breeding and killing trophy white-tailed buck deer."

Augusta Free Press
April 28, 2016

Officials with the Rockingham County Fair Association have rescinded the year-long ban on live bird exhibits at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds. The ban was implemented in the spring of 2015 due to a serious outbreak of avian influenza that posed a potential threat to bird health and the Virginia poultry industry.

"We look forward to having turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese and other fowl return to the Rockingham County Fair this year," said Fair Association General Manager Jeff Ishee. "The live bird exhibits are always one of the most popular attractions during the annual county fair."
