WHAT WE'RE READING

A cross-section of articles we've read this week about HIV/AIDS, STIs and a wide cross-section of structural and systemic factors impacting HIV/AIDS in Black communities.

Hepatitis

Treating hepatitis C with expensive new medicines at the earliest signs of liver damage improves patients' health and is also cost-effective, a new computer simulation suggests.

Prevention

Even though taking a daily pill can protect almost completely against getting  H.I.V., a third of primary care doctors and nurses in the United States have never heard of it, federal health officials said this week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now believes one in four sexually active gay and bisexual men should take Truvada, an HIV prevention pill.

The conclusion, reached in a new report released Tuesday, suggests potentially millions of people should take the pill daily. The report also found that one in five injection drug users and one in 200 sexually active heterosexual men should also take Truvada.

Science

Antiretroviral therapies, or ART, have enabled people with HIV and AIDS to live much longer lives, transforming what was considered a death sentence into a chronic condition. Yet concerns for these patients remain. Up to half of people with HIV on these drug regimens have some sort of cognitive impairment, such as memory loss or problems with executive functioning, despite the virus being almost undetectable in their bodies.

Treatment

LONDON (Reuters) - Some 15.8 million people worldwide are now on HIV treatment and a fast-track strategy to end the AIDS pandemic is starting to show results, the United Nations AIDS program said on Tuesday.

Miscellaneous

NEW YORK (AP) - A New Yorker who rowed across the Atlantic Ocean for AIDS awareness has arrived home in Brooklyn, ending a 21-month journey.

A former police station is providing one of the few places for the country's estimated 1.5 million LGBT seniors to spend their later years together

A company that makes two of the priciest drugs on the market was looking to make profits and didn't care if patients could afford them, a Senate committee said Tuesday.

World AIDS Day recognizes the everyday lives and particular struggles of people around the world living with AIDS and HIV, but one population has been long overlooked. According to recent findings from the World Health Organization that analyzed data from 15 countries, transgender women are nearly 49 times more likely than the general population to contract HIV. This means that, just for being who they are, they are part of the population at highest risk for acquiring HIV.

NewsHour's John Carlos Frey reports in this updated segment on San Francisco's plan to zero out the number of new HIV infections. The city's public health officials, doctors, and activists have made huge strides battling the epidemic and are now pushing for wider use of a drug shown to reduce HIV infections in at-risk men.

This week we continue to talk about PrEP. As I've said over and over, we have the tools to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic. But even though more people are taking PrEP, not enough people are taking the more

Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. The Institute's Mission is to stop the AIDS pandemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing Black institutions and individuals in efforts to confront HIV. The Institute interprets public and private sector HIV policies, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance, disseminates information and provides advocacy mobilization from a uniquely and unapologetically Black point of view.

Support the Black Aids Institute through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC# 12320). The Institute holds the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence for meeting the highest standards of public accountability.
