WHAT WE'RE READING

A cross-section of articles we've read this week about HIV/AIDS, STIs and a wide cross-section of structural and systemic factors impacting HIV/AIDS in Black communities.

MSM

If nothing changes, studies, organizations, and publications all predict that 6 out of 10 Black MSM will be HIV-positive by their 40th birthday.

Science

Bristol-Myers Squibb has announced the 2015 recipients for three $300,000 research grants under its Partnering for Cure program, which this year, will go toward providing new insights on the immunopathology of HIV and the hepatitis B virus (HBV), according to a recent press release from the pharmaceutical company.

A computer model developed by Johns Hopkins health care delivery specialists predicts that strengthening a handful of efforts to keep people with HIV in lifetime care, along with more rigorous testing, would potentially avert a projected 752,000 new HIV infections and 276,000 AIDS deaths in the United States alone over the next 20 years.

Stopping smoking, improving diet and exercising especially important for people living with HIV long-term

Treatment

Is the war on drugs crippling the war on AIDS? And might the AIDS epidemic make governments more willing to treat drug abusers as suffering patients rather than as hardened criminals?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required AbbVie to change the labels for its two hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatments after receiving numerous reports of serious liver injury developing among people while taking the medications, Medscape reports.

Kerry Thomas already knew that he was HIV-positive when he entered the Idaho State Correctional Center (ISCC) in Boise. So did prison officials, both from his health records from a previous prison term and from the publicity of his HIV criminalization case. When he arrived, however, prison medical staff said that they did not have his antiretroviral medications and were unsure when they would be able to provide them.

Miscellaneous

Friday, October 23, is the annual Day of Action to End Violence Against Women Living With HIV, an awareness day spearheaded by the Positive Women's Network-USA (PWN-USA). Events and campaigns are held throughout the country to raise awareness of the fact that HIV-positive women are more likely to experience intimate partner violence than women who are HIV negative.

ViiV Healthcare awarded 23 small grants to support programs at nongovernmental and community-based groups that alleviate discrimination and HIV-related stigma among men who have sex with men (MSM) and the transgender population.

Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. The Institute's Mission is to stop the AIDS pandemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing Black institutions and individuals in efforts to confront HIV. The Institute interprets public and private sector HIV policies, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance, disseminates information and provides advocacy mobilization from a uniquely and unapologetically Black point of view.

Support the Black Aids Institute through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC# 12320). The Institute holds the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence for meeting the highest standards of public accountability.
