A cross-section of articles we've read this week about HIV/AIDS, STIs and a wide cross-section of structural and systemic factors impacting HIV/AIDS in Black communities.
Hepatitis
People with hepatitis C virus (HCV) have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and CVD-related death, especially if they have high blood pressure or diabetes. Publishing their findings in the journal Gastroenterology, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 22 studies published through July 2015 that compared CVD rates between people with and without hep C, or that looked at hep C rates among people with CVD.
MSM
A recently-published survey from the US and Canada reveals that on the whole HIV-negative gay men would rather take pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) intermittently and only before they anticipate sex, in what has been called "event-driven" or "on-demand" PrEP.
Science
Most doctors at the frontline of the HIV epidemic in the United States recommend early antiretroviral therapy (ART) and many also believe they have a role in providing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to the uninfected partners of their patients living with HIV, according to research published in the online edition of Clinical Infectious Diseases. Overall, 87% of doctors recommended ART from the point of diagnosis and most thought PrEP appropriate in some circumstances. However, only a third had actually prescribed PrEP.
HIV particles are effectively trapped by the cervicovaginal mucus from women who harbor a particular vaginal bacteria species, Lactobacillus crispatus. The findings, published this week in mBio, an online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, could lead to new ways to reduce or block vaginal transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Treatment
SAN FRANCISCO - It wasn't his first broken condom, so Rafael didn't worry. But three weeks later, the man he'd met in a bar called to say that he had "probably been exposed" to H.I.V.
Miscellaneous
Philadelphia police have asked for the public's help in finding the men who attacked and killed a transgender woman in Logan in the wee hours of the morning Tuesday.
Almost one year ago today, The New Yorker published the story of a young man named Kalief Browder, who spent three years on Rikers Island without being convicted of a crime. Accused of stealing a backpack in 2010 at the age of 16, he was held on Rikers for more than 1,000 days waiting for a trial that never happened. His brutal detention included, among other abuses, two years in solitary confinement and beatings by officers and inmates. This tragedy of criminal justice was further compounded last June when, two years after his case was dismissed for lack of evidence, Browder, 22, committed suicide.
WASHINGTON - Congress and the Obama administration are frantically seeking ways to hold down Medicare premiums that could rise by roughly 50 percent for some beneficiaries next year, according to lawmakers and Medicare officials.
Annick Borquez, Ph.D., a specialist on using mathematical modeling to estimate the contribution of different sources of risk to HIV incidence in various populations and settings, spoke on a Sept. 3 webinar hosted by the Network for Multidisciplinary Studies on ARV-Based HIV Prevention (NEMUS). She discussed a mathematical model for estimating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of various HIV-prevention approaches among transgender women sex workers (TWS) in Lima, Peru. This is a substudy of a larger study of HIV prevention models among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) in Peru. The mathematical model is the third phase of the study, and was preceded by a stakeholder analysis and a capacity analysis of the Peruvian health system.

Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. The Institute's Mission is to stop the AIDS pandemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing Black institutions and individuals in efforts to confront HIV. The Institute interprets public and private sector HIV policies, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance, disseminates information and provides advocacy mobilization from a uniquely and unapologetically Black point of view.

Support the Black Aids Institute through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC# 12320). The Institute holds the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence for meeting the highest standards of public accountability.
