A cross-section of articles we've read this week about HIV/AIDS, STIs and a wide cross-section of structural and systemic factors impacting HIV/AIDS in Black communities.
Prevention
It's not unusual for contenders in political battles to try to win support with giveaways, a candidate offering tax cuts, for instance, or a labor union giving out free coffee and donuts at a rally. But Planned Parenthood, now embroiled in a fierce fight with Congressional Republicans, is taking the concept to a whole new level: free testing for sexually transmitted diseases
Science
Researchers with the Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine at UNLV have engineered a new protein that they believe has placed science much closer to an HIV cure.
Treatment
Beyond Martin Shkreli's behavior, the price of medications pits the interests of patients against the profits of two big industries - pharmaceuticals and insurance.
Miscellaneous
ROME, Ga. - Right before her unexpected release from prison, Ashley Diamond, a nonviolent offender who had sued Georgia corrections officials for failing to provide her medical treatment and safekeeping, was locked down for 30 days in a windowless single cell. It was dimly lit and eerily silent, and reeked of excrement.
The World Health Organization issued sweeping new guidelines on Wednesday that could put millions more people on H.I.V. drugs than are now getting them. The recommendations could go a long way toward halting the epidemic, health officials say, but would cost untold billions of dollars not yet committed.
The Obama administration hopes to dramatically reduce HIV infections in girls and young woman in 10 sub-Saharan African nations.
Take This Survey on Participating in HIV Cure Research An online survey by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hopes to find out what HIV-positive people think about cure research and whether they're willing to participate in HIV cure-related research.
An AIDS organization put up billboards linking Tinder and Grindr to sexually transmitted diseases. And Tinder is furious.
Being gay at my HBCU is a bittersweet experience for me. Since birth I was raised with the mentality to be "The Man." I was taught to not pursue anything that "threatened" my masculinity. Coming out and showing my true colors wasn't an easy road, but in retrospect I wouldn't change a thing. Through time I've come to understand that the measure of a man is on a broad spectrum not crippled by sexuality.
The former child star kept his diagnosis a secret for 12 years.

Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. The Institute's Mission is to stop the AIDS pandemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing Black institutions and individuals in efforts to confront HIV. The Institute interprets public and private sector HIV policies, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance, disseminates information and provides advocacy mobilization from a uniquely and unapologetically Black point of view.
|
Support the Black Aids Institute through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC# 12320). The Institute holds the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence for meeting the highest standards of public accountability.
